PFA Awards Explained: What awards are given out at the annual ceremony?

The PFA Awards are a prestigious annual ceremony which recognises the outstanding performers in every division from the previous season.

The winners of each award are voted for by their fellow members of the Professional Footballers Association (PFA). Each award has six nominees.

This year's awards ceremony is set to take place at the Manchester Opera House on Tuesday 19th August.

PFA Players' Player of the Year

The most high-profile award, the PFA Players' Player of the Year is awarded to the best performer from the Premier League in the previous season.

Former winners include Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne.

PFA Players' Young Player of the Year

The PFA Players' Young Player of the Year recognises the best performing individual aged 21 or under (as of 1 July immediately preceding the start of the season).

While the award is open to players from all levels, former winners have all been from the Premier League.

PFA Players' Women's Player of the Year

Like the men's award, the PFA Players' Women's Player of the Year is received by the top performing female player from the Women's Super League and Women's Super League 2.

Notable winners include Rachel Daly, Sam Kerr and Vivienne Miedema.

PFA Women's Young Player of the Year

Like the aforementioned men's Young Player of the Year, the PFA Women's Young Player of the Year highlights an outstanding individual aged 21 or under from the previous season.

PFA Fans' Player of the Year

The PFA Fans' Player of the Year award is given to footballers in each of the top four tiers of English football; Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two.

The shortlist for each division is compiled by the members of the PFA before the winner is voted for by the fans.

Championship Player of the Year

The best performers from the Championship are recognised at the PFA Awards with one of six nominees being crowned Championship Player of the Year.

Previous winners include Crysencio Summerville, Chuba Akpom and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

League One Player of the Year

In identical fashion to the Championship Player of the Year, the League One Player of the Year award recognises the best player in the third tier from the previous season.

League Two Player of the Year

League Two rounds up the Player of the Year awards as the best performing six individuals from the fourth tier contest the crown.

PFA Merit Award

The PFA Merit Award is handed out by the given by the Professional Footballers' Association to individuals for meritorious service to football.

In 2024, Dean Lewington received the award after breaking the all-time English record for most league appearances for a single club by making his 771st appearance for MK Dons.

He was accompanied by Fara Williams MBE, who ended her career as the most capped England player in history.

Team of the Year

A Team of the Year is assembled for each of the top four tiers in the men's pyramid and the Women's Super League.

The shortlist is compiled by members of the PFA and voted for by the other players in their respective divisions.

Former Crystal Palace and Arsenal left-back Kenny Samson holds the record for most appearances in a PFA Team of the Year with 11, while Steven Gerrard has the most appearances in the PFA's Premier League Team of the Year with eight.
