The PFA Young Player of the Year award was first handed out in the 1973-74 season with Ipswich defender Kevin Beattie scooping the inaugural prize.
In order to be nominated for the award, players had to be aged 23 or younger at the beginning of the football season but changes in 2021 mean that nominees now have to be 21 or younger when the season starts.
Although the criteria stipulates that players from all levels of English football can win the award, all winners to date have played in the top-flight.
In 2018, Ryan Sessegnon became the first player from outside of England's top division to receive a nomination for the award.
This award is ran alongside the PFA Player of the Year gong that is open to all ages. So far, just three players have won both prizes in the same season with Gareth Bale getting his name alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Andy Gray.

Manchester United boast the most winners but no one from the club has scooped the award since 2006/07.
Cristiano Ronaldo was successful that season and it came off the back of back-to-back wins for Wayne Rooney.
United had their golden spell throughout the 1990s when Ryan Giggs (twice), Lee Sharpe and David Beckham all landed the award.
