PFA Young Player of the Year previous winners

Find out the previous recipients of the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Football

The PFA Young Player of the Year award was first handed out in the 1973-74 season with Ipswich defender Kevin Beattie scooping the inaugural prize.

In order to be nominated for the award, players had to be aged 23 or younger at the beginning of the football season but changes in 2021 mean that nominees now have to be 21 or younger when the season starts.

Although the criteria stipulates that players from all levels of English football can win the award, all winners to date have played in the top-flight.

In 2018, Ryan Sessegnon became the first player from outside of England's top division to receive a nomination for the award.

This award is ran alongside the PFA Player of the Year gong that is open to all ages. So far, just three players have won both prizes in the same season with Gareth Bale getting his name alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Andy Gray.

2024/25 PFA Young Player of the Year nominees

Brand new Chelsea signing Liam Delap has been nominated for his exploits at Ipswich Town last season where despite suffering relegation, the 22-year-old still managed to net 12 times in his debut Premier League campaign.

Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri also earn nominations after Arsenal finished second for a third consecutive season under Mikel Arteta.

It has been a breakout campaign Myles-Skelly (18), with the full-back starting 23 Premier League games as well as making his senior debut for England.

With Dean Huijsen already signed for Real Madrid and Milos Kerkez a reported Liverpool target, it could be that both nominees for Bournemouth are at different clubs for the start of the 2025/26 season.

Huijsen showed maturity beyond his years at the heart of the Cherries' defence, while Kerkez played every single league match during a season where he was arguably the standout full-back across the entire English top-flight.

Finally, Morgan Rogers' 18 direct goal contributions during another excellent season for Aston Villa means that he rounds off the nominations.

  • Liam Delap (Ipswich Town)
  • Dean Huijsen (Bournemouth)
  • Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth)
  • Myles Lewis-Skelly (Arsenal)
  • Ethan Nwaneri (Arsenal)
  • Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa)
