Next Wigan Manager: Contenders to replace Gary Caldwell

Wigan Athletic are rooted to the bottom of the League One table and fans have started to question whether or not Gary Caldwell should remain in charge of the club.

His team selection and tactics have come under fire during an opening three months of the season where the Latics have picked up just seven points.

Caldwell has presided over just one win in his last seven league matches and Tuesday night's defeat at Oxford leaves Wigan not just 24th in the table, but also with the joint-worst goalscoring record in the division.

We take a look at the candidates who could replace Caldwell at the Brick Community Stadium in the event of his dismissal.

Next Wigan Manager Contenders

Kevin Nolan

Former West Ham and Bolton midfielder Kevin Nolan has had three, albeit brief, stints as an EFL boss and has been out of a job since being let go by Northampton Town earlier this year.

He did show in flashes with Leyton Orient and Notts County that he was a very capable manager for the level, avoiding relegation with the latter when inheriting a difficult situation.

Wigan currently find themselves in a similar scenario and could benefit from someone who has been there and done it before.

Darren Ferguson

Until the appointment of Robbie Savage, there was some thought that Darren Ferguson could be in the mix for a fifth spell in charge of Peterborough United, less than one year on from his most recent stint in the dugout at London Road.

The 54-year-old didn't end up back with the Posh, but is still available for hire.

In his long career as a coach, Ferguson has lifted the EFL Trophy three times and earned promotion into the second tier on three separate occasions.

Stuart Maynard

It came as a surprise to almost everyone when Stuart Maynard left York City over the summer and it can only be a matter of time before he is back in the dugout somewhere.

Maynard worked wonders with the Minstermen, amassing 108 points to win the National League title as the club put an end to its 10-year absence from the EFL.

The 46-year-old had only taken charge of Wealdstone and Notts County before joining York and could well be a coach on an upwards trajectory.
