Many observers felt that Michael Carrick deserved the permanent job at Old Trafford following a successful interim spell last season.

Antonio Conte
Italian coach Antonio Conte is without a club after leaving Napoli at the end of last season.
He has won the Serie A title with Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli during his career, while he also won the Premier League and the FA Cup during his time at Chelsea.
His time at Tottenham Hotspur was less successful but even if his personality divides opinion, there is no doubt that Conte is a winner.
Eddie Howe
Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is going to be the obvious name that becomes linked with a host of positions until he returns to management.
Howe left his role at St James' Park in July following a campaign that didn't meet his previous high standards, as well as a difficult summer transfer window that saw a number of key players sold.
The 48-year-old twice guided Newcastle into the UEFA Champions League, while he also won the EFL Cup during his time on Tyneside.
Thomas Tuchel
It would be a seismic move for Manchester United to try and prize away current England manager Thomas Tuchel.
However, he has been linked with the club before and any move might be more achievable following the way that Tuchel's England exited the World Cup.
Supporters placed most of the blame at Tuchel's door after his defensive tactics saw England throw away a lead to lose 2-1 to Argentina in the semi-finals.
Unai Emery
It would be pretty improbable to imagine Unai Emery being a viable option for United throughout the majority of last season.
But the sale of Morgan Rogers, Emiliano Martinez, Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins has meant that Emery has pretty much had to start again with Aston Villa this time around.
While he is seemingly happy to oversee the start of a new era at Villa Park for now, an opportunity to join Man Utd might now be one that he finds more appealing.
Mauricio Pochettino
Mauricio Pochettino agreed to stay on as USA manager until after the 2030 World Cup after signing a contract extension last month.
But the nature of a 4-1 defeat to Belgium at the Round of 16 stage of a home World Cup will linger with Pochettino for a long time.
His time at Tottenham Hotspur still makes Pochettino an attractive proposition for Premier League owners, but the recent contract extension does complicate matters.
