Premier League winners and losers from the weekend

The Premier League returned after a three-week absence with all eyes on one fixture.

Arsenal were looking to bounce back from their defeat to Brighton, Tottenham were looking for their first win of the season, while Chelsea were also looking to recover from a mini-blip.

But all the attention was on Anfield as Liverpool welcomed Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, with Enzo Maresca's men making it six wins from six in a 3-0 win.

Take a look at the weekend's winners and losers from the Premier League.

Football

Winners

Chelsea

There were concerns creeping in at Stamford Bridge before the international break. The early optimism quelled by taking one point from games with Hull City and Brentford, but the Blues were back with a bang against Bournemouth, firing in two early goals before sealing the win shortly after the break.

Bournemouth have been better than their results suggested, but couldn't live with Chelsea on Saturday. Xabi Alonso still waits for his first clean sheet as Chelsea boss, but he won't mind conceding once if his side keep scoring five.

Ipswich Town

It's easy for newly promoted sides to go behind and fall apart, beaten by the first setback and lacking the belief and quality to get themselves back into the game. Ipswich, however, have shown all the resilience that will be needed to keep themselves up, and thus far, Gary O'Neil deserves plenty of credit for that.

They were pegged back by Sunderland on the opening weekend and scored a late winner, they netted a late consolation at Old Trafford having gone 5-1 down, scored a late winner at Crystal Palace and have now come from 1-0 down to beat relegation rivals Fulham.

Ipswich were second best for much of the contest, but hung in there and reaped the rewards. Survival is a very realistic prospect for the Tractor Boys.

Manchester City

Anfield could have produced just about anything on Sunday. Liverpool fans were as excoriating as expected with City fans rising above the jibes. The players did all they could, initially quietening a hostile crowd, growing into the game throughout the first half.

Without any clear-cut chances, it was tough to see which way the game would go, but Ryan Gravenberch's harsh dismissal saw City take charge, hitting three past Liverpool.

The biggest positive for Enzo Maresca however is how his players responded. While the outside noise could have affected them, City responded with a convincing win.

Losers

Manchester United

Gary Neville claimed the first 15 minutes of Manchester United's second half with Fulham was the worst 15 minutes he'd ever seen from a United side. Ignoring the fact that it wasn't even the worst 15 minutes of United's season, they were considerably worse against Tottenham.

Spurs were the crisis club going into the international break, rock bottom without a win, and waiting almost a full five games to score a goal. They rocked up at Old Trafford and should've had three by the break. United were extremely lucky to take the lead and, frankly, were lucky to leave with a point after Dominic Solanke's stoppage time equaliser.

Fulham

There was a lot to like about Fulham's performance at Ipswich, who've already proved they'll be no pushovers this season. Naturally, for all their chances and good play, it took a 25-yard driven effort from Ryan Sessegnon through a crowd of bodies to give them a lead.

A draw at Portman Road is better than many sides will manage this season, but to be 1-0 up against a newly promoted side in a campaign where many are tipping you for the drop, it's imperative to hold on.

To not even take a point from the game having allowed two late goals was an absolute gut-punch for Alvaro Arbeloa, whose side invited pressure in the later stages and were once again punished.

On another day, Fulham win comfortably and the pressure is somewhat alleviated. As it is, Arbeloa faces the other two newly promoted sides next in Hull City and Coventry, and failure to win either of those could spell the end.
