Next Fulham Manager Contenders

Alvaro Arbeloa reportedly has two matches to save his job following a winless start to his Fulham tenure.

The Cottagers were on the cusp of their first win of the Premier League season away at Ipswich Town when they conceded twice after the 88th minute to lose 2-1 at Portman Road.

The defeat has piled the pressure on Arbeloa, who was handed the arduous task of succeeding the popular Marco Silva in the Craven Cottage dugout this summer.

It's been rumoured that Arbeloa now has the next two matches against newly promoted sides Hull City and Coventry City to prove he is the man to lead Fulham forward.

Should the former Real Madrid head coach depart, we've taken a look at the candidates who might be in the frame to take over in west London.

Premier League

Thomas Frank

Given his affiliation to Brentford, Thomas Frank is unlikely to be a popular selection among the Fulham faithful.

However, given his success at the Gtech Community Stadium, the Dane would provide a steadying hand that could enable the Cottagers to prosper.

The job at Tottenham Hotspur ultimately proved too big for him, although the struggles of Roberto De Zerbi in the period since provide an apt reminder of the poisoned chalice that is the Spurs gig.

Yes, Frank was the beneficiary of a flawless system at Brentford which has allowed Keith Andrews to showcase his tactical nous, but there is enough talent in the Fulham camp for Frank to demonstrate his player development skills and strategic flexibility.

Kjetil Knutsen

Kjetil Knutsen has won an array of plaudits for the work he's overseen at Bodø/Glimt.

With a high intensity, possession-based approach, the Norwegian coach guided the club to their maiden Eliteserien title in 2020 before winning the league on three more occasions in the six years since.

Bodø/Glimt's domestic dominance also translated onto the continental stage as they reached the UEFA Europa League semi-finals before progressing to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, defeating the likes of Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and Inter in the process.

Would Knutsen's methods translate to the Premier League? It's intriguing that no major European side has gone all out to acquire his services given the vast success he's enjoyed in Bodø.

Julian Schuster

There are countless case studies where a coach has succeeded a legendary figure at a club and failed, but not at Freiburg.

Julian Schuster was handed his first managerial role following the end of Christian Streich's historic tenure in the Black Forest at the end of the 2023/24 season and the former Freiburg captain has taken the club to new heights.

In his first campaign, Freiburg finished fifth in the Bundesliga, narrowly missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification. Last season Schuster guided the club to the UEFA Europa League final, where they were beaten by Aston Villa, and orchestrated another top-seven finish in Germany's top-flight.

This season Freiburg are flying at the top of the Bundesliga and are the only unbeaten team outside the German behemoths of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Whether Schuster would be inclined to leave the Freiburg project remains to be seen, but the 41-year-old is likely to be on the radar of many clubs in the future.

Arne Slot

Arne Slot was linked to the Fulham vacancy in the summer but reportedly rejected the role before Arbeloa got the job.

With the greatest respect to Fulham, going from Anfield to Craven Cottage might not be how the Dutchman envisioned his managerial career unfolding, but following a damning season with Liverpool, the Cottagers gig could be a great one for Slot to rebuild his reputation.

Slot's style of play come under criticism by the Reds faithful and a defensive vulnerability undermined Liverpool in their Premier League title defence as their points tally plummeted by 24 points.

Injuries were also a key factor in Liverpool's decline, and Slot may benefit from a fresh project where the scrutiny isn't so great.

Kieran McKenna

At one stage in the summer it appeared the stage was set for Kieran McKenna to take over from Silva at Fulham.

But in an unexpected turn of events, the Northern Irishman announced he was stepping down from his role as Ipswich Town manager to focus on his family.

While McKenna is currently unattached, any club looking to appoint him as manager before next summer would still have to pay Ipswich £8m in compensation.

If McKenna was to make a return to the dugout, he would arrive in the Premier League with a point to prove in light of how his one top-flight campaign unfolded as the Tractor Boys were relegated with a whimper under his stewardship.

Nevertheless, he remains a highly-rated coach in light of how he hauled Ipswich into the Premier League from League One, and he possesses the tactical acumen and man-management attributes to galvanise Fulham.
