Newcastle turn attention to £30million midfielder after missing out on Johan Manzambi

Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a move for Wolves' Joao Gomes after their move for Johan Manzambi was hijacked by Aston Villa earlier this week.

The Magpies appeared close to securing a move for Manzambi, who had impressed at the World Cup this summer, netting three goals and registering two assists in just four appearances before an injury saw him miss the latter stages of Switzerland's run to the quarter-finals.

Reports suggested that Newcastle had agreed a fee with Freiburg in a deal worth around £50million before Aston Villa hijacked the move on Monday.

With their primary midfield target now appearing to be bound for the West Midlands, the club have been forced to pivot towards alternative options in the centre of the park.

Premier League

A report from The Athletic has claimed that Wolves' Gomes has been named in internal discussions at St James' Park, with the Brazilian on course to leave Molineux this summer following the club's relegation to the Championship.

Gomes already has more than 100 Premier League appearances under his belt at the age of 25, and has earned ten senior caps for Brazil since making his debut against England at Wembley in 2024.

While Gomes may be a shrewd acquisition for Newcastle, they would likely face significant competition should they join the race to try and secure his signature.

Atletico Madrid appeared to be his most likely destination when the transfer window opened, with a deal worth said to have been agreed between the two clubs €45m.

However the talks broke down last week amid frustrations from Atletico regarding Gomes' agent Jorge Mendes, who reportedly played a role in brokering Bernardo Silva's move to Real Madrid amidst their own pursuit of the former Manchester City man.

While the move to La Liga ultimately did not materialise, in recent days Gomes has been linked with both Liverpool and Manchester United, in addition to clubs from abroad, potentially opening Eddie Howe up to once again being beaten to the punch by their Premier League rivals.
