Newcastle striker could be set for Serie A switch

Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade could be set to leave the club following reported interest from Serie A giants Juventus.

Journalist Alex Crook has reported that Juventus are currently leading the race to sign the German forward.

Woltemade has found himself forced down the pecking order at Newcastle following the arrival of Matthias Jaissle as the club's new manager.

The 6ft 6ins striker was left out of the starting line-up against Liverpool on the opening weekend as William Osula and Yoane Wissa were preferred in attack.

Osula was ruled out of Sunday's win at Tottenham Hotspur but Woltemade again had to settle for a place on the bench as Jaissle reshuffled his team to play Wissa as a lone striker.

Woltemade arrived on Tyneside at the start of last season for a club record fee of £65 million.

After scoring against Wolverhampton Wanderers on his debut, hopes were high that he could be the ideal replacement following Alexander Isak's move to Liverpool.

But he only managed a total of eight league goals during the campaign as he failed to justify the sizeable transfer fee.

At the age of 24, there is still time for Woltemade to become one of the best strikers in European football, but a move away from St James' Park may be required in order to re-ignite his career.
