To say that this competition has been dominated by Phil Taylor would be an understatement.
The 'Power' leads the way with the most honours, winning the World Matchplay on 16 occasions. His first title came in 1995, while he won the competition last in 2017.
Michael van Gerwen and Rod Harrington are the only players on the list to have won the World Matchplay more than once, with 'Mighty Mike' winning three tiles and Harrington victorious on two occasions.
While Van Gerwen will be slightly disappointed not to have more World Matchplay titles to his name at the age of 35, he will take pride in the fact that he is the only player to beat Phil Taylor in a World Matchplay final, beating the 'Power' 18-10 in 2016.
10 players have won the competition once, including Luke Humphries, Peter Wright and Gary Anderson, with Taylor's dominance evident from the fact that six of this top 10 list won the World Matchplay after he had retired in 2018.
