Middlesbrough closing in on in-demand free agent

Middlesbrough are expected to imminently seal a deal to snap-up free agent defender Sam Byram following his release from Leeds United at the end of last season.

According to the Northern Echo, the 32-year-old is currently on Teeside undertaking a medical ahead of completing a move to the Riverside Stadium.

It's expected the vastly experienced full-back will be the latest new addition to Kim Hellberg's squad with the club having spent heavily this summer in a bid to end Boro's Premier League absence.

Tottenham Hotspur pair Will Lankshear and Ashley Phillips have arrived in a combined deal that could total almost £40 million, whilst Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek and United States star Max Arfsten have also arrived for big money.

Whilst Byram's capture will come amidst far less fanfare, it still represents a coup for Middlesbrough with a number of other second-tier sides having expressed an interest in the former Norwich City man.

Byram bid farewell to Leeds earlier this summer having played a key role in the fortunes over the past few years, racking up a total of 83 appearances for the club, including 39 in their promotion-winning campaign in 2024/25.

He found first-team opportunities in the top-flight hard to come by last term, but was still named in 18 Premier League matchday squads as boss Daniel Farke relied heavily on the dressing room influence of the Thurrock star.

Boro's head of football Kieran Scott recently revealed the club plan to be "aggressive" during the final week of the window with Byram's imminent arrival expected to be followed by at least one or two more further additions.
