Michael Edwards has quit his role as Fenway Sports Group's CEO of football at Liverpool.
James Pearce of The Athletic reported that the 47-year-old has 'already served his notice period' after informing the FSG hierarchy of his decision to leave 'last autumn'.
FSG are reportedly unlikely to recruit a replacement for Edwards, with president Mike Gordon set to 'resume control' of running the football operations at the club for the ongoing summer transfer window.
Liverpool were all set for a summer of change with the departures of Reds trio Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson and Ibrahima Konate, followed by the sacking of Arne Slot and subsequent arrival of Andoni Iraola, and Edwards' exit only adds more fuel to the fire.
He returned to the FSG fold following the departure of Jurgen Klopp in 2024, accompanied by Richard Hughes -- who would join as the Reds' Sporting Director in the same summer.
While they oversaw a relatively quiet 2024/25 summer window -- with Federico Chiesa the only addition -- they played leading roles in appointing Arne Slot, who would lead Liverpool to a record-levelling 20th league title in his debut campaign.
Edwards' second summer overseeing the operations at Anfield was far from quiet, with the reigning champions adding in excess of £400m worth a talent to a league-winning team; this included the arrival of Alexander Isak, who joined the club for an all-time Premier League record fee of £125m.
While the need for redirection post-Klopp was evident, Edwards made it clear that FSG's commitment to launching a multi-club model was vital in convincing him to accept a new role as CEO of football -- having previously been employed at the club as the Sporting Director.
As reported by Pearce, Edwards conducted analysis 'on around 25 clubs across Europe' to add to FSG's model, but the board never gave 'the green light' and instead 'shelved plans' to buy a second club -- frustrating the CEO of football and ultimately leading to him leaving the club.
Edwards is highly of in the football world -- renowned for his shrewd negotiating skills and eye for talent -- and so his exit proves a huge blow for the Reds.
Sporting Director Hughes is also set to leave the club upon the expiry of his contract in 2027, with Al Hilal likely to add the Scotsman to their club fold.
