Max Homa misses out on US Open place by one shot on Golf's Longest Day

Golf's Longest Day. The infamous day in which hundreds of golfers not yet qualified play 36 holes of golf to try and book their place at the US Open.

Unlike the other three majors in which past champions are given special exemptions, the US Open only invites the last 10 winners, and if you're not one of the top players on the Official World Golf Rankings prior to the tournament, you'll have a hard time getting in.

While Final Qualifying events have already taken place around the world, 10 more were played on Monday in New York, Georgia, California, Ohio, Oregon, Maryland, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Canada.

Dozens of PGA Tour regulars and even a couple of former US Open winners won't be pegging it up at Shinnecock Hills.

Webb Simpson who won in 2012 and Lucas Glover who won in 2019 failed to qualify, while a number of recent PGA winners failed to progress. Adam Schenk, who's played in the last four US Opens, won the Butterfield Bermuda Championship last year to secure his PGA Tour card and move up more than 100 spots in the OWGR, but won't be appearing at Shinnecock. The big-hitting Aldrich Potgieter, who looks to have a promising future in the game having taken last year's Rocket Classic, was denied a second US Open appearance after failing to qualify.

Tony Finau is one of the biggest absentees. The former world number nine who was T3 at the 2024 US Open is now three years removed from his last win and has now fallen out of the top 100 in the world. Joe Highsmith won last year's Cognizant Classic but has desperately struggled for form since, and despite appearing in two Signature Events this year, he'll miss out on the US Open.

With the RBC Canadian Open taking place at TPC Toronto, many of this week's field opted to take on qualifying at nearby Lambton Golf and Country Club, including Homa, who missed a putt on the 18th green to secure his place. England's John Parry qualified, though fellow countrymen Matt Wallace and Jordan Smith missed out by a shot.

It puts even more pressure on this week's Canadian Open, with most players knowing that only a win will see them crack the OWGR top 60 in time to play at next week's US Open.
