Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has announced his shock retirement from international cricket.
The 35-year-old has brought an end to his glittering career effective immediately just one game into New Zealand's three-match Test series in England.
Williamson scored 0 and 18 during the opening Test at Lord's and has decided not to play any further part in the remaining fixtures at the The Oval and Trent Bridge.
Reflecting on his stellar 16-year with the Black Caps, the prolific batter spoke of the "pride" he felt whilst representing his country and the optimism he had for the current crop of players going forward.
"I've thought about it for a while, but over the last few days it's become clear now is the right time," Williamson wrote in a statement to New Zealand Cricket.
“I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand.
“Continuing with anything less wouldn’t be right and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms."
Williamson retires as one of New Zealand's greatest-ever players.
He finishes as his nation's all-time leading run-getter in Test cricket, scoring 9,515 runs at an average of 54.06 across 110 matches. In 2021, Williamson captained New Zealand to success in the World Test Championship final against India at Lord's.
His abilities were not just limited to the Test arena either. Williamson is New Zealand's run scorer in ODIs and second-highest in T20Is, amassing 9,831 runs across both formats.
Aside from success in the inaugural World Test Championship final, Williamson also led his country to two T20 World Cup finals, an ODI World Cup final and the final of the ICC Champions Trophy.
“I leave feeling optimistic about where this group is heading. There’s a huge amount of talent, and a real desire to do something special with this New Zealand team," Williamson continued.
“It’s a team I love, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of it for so long. It will continue to be dear to my heart.”
Part of his career will also be remembered for his role in the creation of the "Fab Four".
A term coined by ex-New Zealand skipper Martin Crowe, the "Fab Four" refers to Williamson, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Joe Root - a selection of the most talented batters across their era.
Of the quartet, Williamson's career Test average of 54.06 puts him second behind Aussie great Smith.
