Jurgen Klopp has taken the unconventional approach of naming 44 players in his first Germany squad ahead of their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against the Netherlands, Greece and Serbia.
Squads typically consist of 23 players during the international break, but Klopp has taken advantage of UEFA's relaxed squad rulings in the Nations League which enables a country to submit a new squad list 24 hours before each fixture.
The regulations mean Klopp could theoretically change all 23 players between two fixtures, and the former Liverpool boss is using his first international window as an opportunity to assess individuals who would normally be on the periphery of the Germany squad.
The 44 players have been divided into two squads. The first squad will play the Netherlands in Amsterdam on 24th September before welcoming Greece to Augsburg on 27th September. Moving into October, the second squad will then be introduced for the visit of Serbia on the 1st and the trip to Greece on the 4th.
"I want to get to know as many players as possible," Klopp said at a news conference.
"There is no A or B team. The squads are put together in a way that makes sense on the pitch and in terms of character and experience."
16 uncapped players feature in Klopp's 44-strong squad, including SV Elversberg midfielder Felix Keidel, Brentford's Vitaly Janelt, and Celtic midfielder Mika Baur.
However, there is no place for Deniz Undav, Oliver Baumann, Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sané, while Klopp has revealed Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be Germany's number one option in the meantime following Manuel Neuer's retirement.
"It really felt like you had the feeling after the World Cup that German football is on its knees and we have no talents, no footballers," Klopp said.
"In the past four weeks as we've been looking closely and plenty of talents have caught our eye.
"It's a squad for two or three years from now, not just for the next four international games."
