England's Joe Root became the second-highest run-scorer in the history of Test cricket on the third day of the fourth Test between England and India at Emirates Old Trafford.
The England batsman moved above Ricky Ponting's tally of 13,378 runs during the afternoon session and only India great Sachin Tendulkar has scored more runs in the purest form of the game.
Root is still well over 2,000 runs short of Tendulkar's remarkable haul of 15,921 Test runs but with time on his side and his game continuing to flourish, there is every chance that Root could break Tendulkar's record.
The record has been in Root's sights for some time, particularly after he moved ahead of Alastair Cook as England's leading Test run-scorer in Pakistan last October.
Root is comfortably at the top of the ICC batting rankings ahead of Kane Williamson and his Yorkshire teammate Harry Brook, and he looks a class above most batsmen in world cricket at the moment.
The 34-year-old also registered his 38th Test hundred during the fourth Test, which takes him two clear of Rahul Dravid and Steve Smith on the list of all-time Test centuries.
He is now level with Kumar Sangakkara in joint-fourth position on the all-time list and is now closing in on Ponting who is in third place on that particular list with 41 Test hundreds.
