Jannik Sinner's preparations for the US Open are set to be disrupted with the Italian an injury doubt for the upcoming Cincinnati Open.
The world number one announced at the end of July his withdrawal from the Canadian Open, which is another Masters 1000 event preceding the Cincinnati Open, as he attempted to manage his schedule around the Grand Slams.
Sinner features on the entry list for the Ohio tournament and the 24-year-old had planned to make his first competitive appearance since the Wimbledon final in Cincinnati, but his participation in the flagship event is in jeopardy as he manages an ongoing fitness issue.
According to Italian outlet Corriere Della Sera, Sinner underwent a routine check-up in Italy, but the five-time Grand Slam champion set to undergo further treatment on a knee issue that he's been managing in recent months.
If Sinner does withdraw from the Cincinnati Open, he will join rival Carlos Alcaraz on the sidelines after the Spaniard was forced to pull out of the tournament due to an ongoing wrist injury.
However, unlike Alcaraz, who is yet to make a competitive appearance since sustaining the issue in April, Sinner's participation in the US Open is not under threat.
Sinner has been forced to be selective with the tournaments in his schedule after fitness concerns arose following his shock elimination at the hands of Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the French Open second round.
The Italian played in all clay-court Masters 1000 events, emerging triumphant in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome, but he succumbed to the sweltering Parisian heat at the French Open despite being two sets and a break up in his clash against the Argentine Cerundolo.
Sinner subsequently opted to skip all warm-up tournaments in the lead to Wimbledon, and despite a slow start at the All England Club, his decision to defend his title without any preparation was vindicated as he conquered Alexander Zverev in the final.
The manner in which he grew into the grass-court Grand Slam after surviving a first-round scare against Miomir Kecmanovic will give Sinner confidence he can replicate the achievement at Flushing Meadows.
He is the 4/6 favourite to win a sixth major title in the final Grand Slam of the season, with French Open champion Alexander Zverev priced at 8/1 and 24-time Grand Slam victor Novak Djokovic 11/1.
