Jadon Sancho handed career lifeline as La Liga club make formal offer

Getafe have made a formal approach to sign free agent Jadon Sancho.

The winger has been without a club since his contract at Manchester United expired in the summer and the 26-year-old has spent the subsequent months assessing his options.

Getafe announced the signing of former Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal on Tuesday and the Madrid-based club are keen to acquire another marquee signing as they balance the domestic season alongside their UEFA Conference League exploits.

However, Getafe had to jump many financial hurdles to get the Carvajal deal over the line due to La Liga's financial fair play framework, and their offer to Sancho will be heavily scrutinised to ensure it fulfils the league's economic rules.

The stark decline of Sancho's career was epitomised by United's willingness to let him leave on a free after splashing £73m to sign him from Borussia Dortmund in 2021.

Sunderland were rumoured to be interested in acquiring Sancho during the summer as they looked to strengthen the depth of their squad for a campaign in the UEFA Europa League, but no move came to fruition and it was later revealed that Sancho favoured a move away from England.

The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at Aston Villa where he made 39 appearances in all competitions for Unai Emery's side. He failed to score in 23 Premier League appearances, but he did net in one European fixture against Fenerbahce and appeared as a late substitute during their Europa League triumph over Freiburg in May.

Sancho previously had loan spells at Dortmund and Chelsea, the latter deciding to pay a £5m penalty to avoid signing the winger on a permanent basis at the end of his temporary stint.

He was spotted training at North West Counties club Flixton in August, prompting speculation he was on trial with the non-league outfit - a story Flixton were forced to deny.

"To clarify, Jadon was not on trial with the club and was not involved in any transfer discussions," Flixton wrote in a statement on social media.

"He simply used our facilities for a private training session to maintain his fitness while preparing for the next chapter of his career."

Getafe are currently 14th in La Liga with two wins from their opening eight matches.

Jose Bordelas' side finished seventh in Spain's top-flight last season despite scoring just 32 goals in 38 matches.
