Former Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal takes major pay cut to join Getafe

Dani Carvajal's protracted search for a new club has finally ended after the former Real Madrid captain was unveiled as a Getafe player.

Regarded as one of the greatest right-backs of his generation, the 34-year-old has been without a team since the end of June when his contract with Real Madrid expired.

Carvajal departed the Bernabeu as one of the most decorated players in the club's history, achieving an astonishing 27 trophies across a 13-year spell including six UEFA Champions League titles.

The former Spain international is not venturing too far for the next chapter of his career as he joins Madrid-based Getafe on a one-year deal.

Jose Bordelas' side finished seventh in La Liga last season and qualified for the UEFA Conference League, despite only scoring 32 league goals.

Getafe are currently 14th in Spain's top-flight with two wins from their opening eight matches and the arrival of Carvajal is a major boost with Bordelas eager to strengthen his defensive options.

The right-back has been blighted by injuries in the last two years. Suffering a cruciate ligament tear in October 2024, Carvajal suffered another knee injury last year and was restricted to just 17 appearances in La Liga in the previous campaign.

Carvajal is expected to compete with Kiko Femenia for a starting berth and he also provides Bordelas with the option of switching to a back three.

His move to Getafe was at risk of being scuppered due to La Liga's financial fair play framework.

Despite Carvajal's willingness to take a substantial pay cut, La Liga financial executives were not satisfied about the legitimacy of the agreed salary. Reports in Spain suggested Getafe had provided documentation proposing an annual salary of approximately €400,000, with the league's regulators rejecting the proposal due to Carvajal's rumoured €10m per year contract at Real Madrid.

La Liga's squad cost limit rule involves the league providing their own baseline valuation of players to prevent clubs from under-reporting player costs and subsequently supplementing a player's income through third-party agreements.

Getafe ultimately satisfied La Liga's economic rules with their contract for Carvajal and the defender is now in line to make his debut against Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Monday.
