Istanbul Park returns to F1 calendar from 2027

The popular Istanbul Park circuit will return to the Formula 1 calendar from 2027 after terms were agreed on a new five-year deal.

F1 has not raced in Turkey since 2021 when the event was briefly reintegrated into the calendar in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Istanbul Park was also the scene of Lewis Hamilton's coronation as a seven-time world champion in 2020 as the Briton prevailed in a thrilling wet race.

It had previously hosted races between 2005 and 2011, and although there was optimism Istanbul Park would be a permanent fixture on the F1 calendar following the successes of the 2020 and 2021 races, financial restraints meant no such deal was struck.

However, the circuit found itself under new management in 2024 when Can Bilim Eğitim Kurumları A.Ş. purchased a 30-year lease for $117.8 million with the intention of restoring Istanbul Park in F1.

Negotiations subsequently stalled, but in February F1 president Stefano Domenicalli revealed progress had been made on a deal that would see Turkey slot back into the calendar as one of 24 races.

Domenicali said: "We are delighted to be returning to the incredible and vibrant city of Istanbul from 2027 to thrill all our fans in Turkey and around the world on one of the most exciting and challenging circuits in Formula 1.

"As a city, Istanbul represents a cultural gateway between Europe and Asia, offering a unique blend of history and tradition with a forward-thinking approach to sport, business, and entertainment."

Turkey will not be the only venue returning to F1 next year with Portugal's Portimao also set to reappear having featured during the Covid-interrupted 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Turkey and Portugal will fill the vacant Dutch Grand Prix slot with Zandvoort entering its final year, while Barcelona and Spa-Francorchamps are set to rotate and become biannual races.

Istanbul Park will now host the Turkish Grand Prix until 2032.

Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: "Formula 1 ranks among the world's foremost sporting events, distinguished by its spectacle, its young fan base, and its leadership in automotive technologies.

"In our country, too, Formula 1 enjoys a broad following across all age groups - especially among our youth - with a truly passionate fanbase.

"The races reach nearly 19 million people in our country, while around 7.5 million follow them closely on social media.

"I regard Turkey's return to the Formula 1 calendar as a clear reflection of the strong confidence placed in our country - in our robust organisational capacity, in our modern sports and healthcare infrastructure, and, of course, in the renowned hospitality of the Turkish nation."
