Hull KR's Jez Litten "chasing history" ahead of Challenge Cup final

Hull Kingston Rovers hooker Jez Litten has said the side want to write their names in history ahead of their Challenge Cup final with Wigan Warriors on Saturday.

It could be argued the Robins have already surpassed the achievements of their mid-1980s side that won back-to-back league titles in winning the treble last year and the World Club Challenge this, but Litten is hungry for more as they stand on the precipice of a fifth straight piece of silverware.

"We want to write our names in history," said Litten. "It’s been a long time since we’ve had that at Hull KR and hopefully we can go down as legends in years to come. I want to leave a legacy at this club.

"We’ve had a lot of heartbreaks but we’re chasing the success, we want to be like the big clubs like Wigan, Saints, Leeds who’ve been successful over a lot of years.

"We’re hungry, we want to win more. Nothing’s ever enough. I think you’ve got to be like that in sport and it’s why we’ve been successful as a team."

Wigan v Hull KR

It's KR's third Challenge Cup final in four years, having lost on golden point to Leigh Leopards in 2023 and beaten Warrington Wolves in 2025, but Litten says it still feels as special as the first time.

"It still feels the same, it’s a special week to be a part of," Litten added. "You’ve got to pinch yourself and soak up these experiences because you don’t know how often they’re going to come around. I’ve still got the butterflies in my stomach and just happy to be a part of it.

"We’re confident in these big games. We’re coming up against a champion outfit in Wigan. We’ve had good and bad experiences in finals and semi-finals and I think they all serve you well on these occasions. We know as a team everyone’s going to have to perform as a 9/10 or 10/10 but we’re confident we can do that."

Saturday's Challenge Cup final comes under something of a cloud from last week's Super League clash, where Wigan opted to prioritise their Wembley trip and rest their star players, leading to a 62-4 thrashing. While Matt Peet's decision only adds to the pressure ahead of Saturday's final, Litten refused to be drawn on the matter.

"I don't know [if there's more pressure on Wigan]," said Litten. "They’ve chosen a route to rest some players and that might have been right for them but I don’t think it was right for us, but I don’t want to look too much into it. We know a strong Wigan outfit will be turning up. We can only focus on what we can control."

The Robins are still to announce Willie Peters' successor, with the Australian set to return to the Southern Hemisphere at the end of the season, and Litten credits Peters with his development as a player.

On the impact Peters had when moving to east Hull, Litten said: "The standards of training, the demands he has on the players and the coaching staff. Not perfection, but for things to be right, and it’s got to be consistent which is something he’s brought in.

"We’ve got some things written on the wall but it’s not just words, the team lives by it, it’s massive in the culture that we’ve got.

"The way he’s challenged me, I wouldn’t be the player I am now without Willie, and hopefully we can send him out on a high."
