How Tottenham Hotspur could line up after Tonali & Fernandes signings

It's been a summer of upheaval at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and one that will no doubt excite Spurs supporters as they look to rectify the mistakes of the previous campaign.

Tottenham preserved their Premier League status by the skin of their teeth as a final day win over Everton meant they finished two points above the relegation zone, resulting in West Ham's igmonious demotion to the Championship.

It was the second consecutive season that Tottenham had finished 17th in the Premier League, but with former Brighton and Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi now at the helm, the club are aiming to banish the frustration of two dismal campaigns by fighting at the top end of the division.

It was evident Spurs needed to invest heavily into their playing squad and the 2025 Europa League champions certainly haven't rested on their laurels.

Tottenham moved swiftly to acquire Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi and Liverpool's Andy Robertson on free transfers, while the £52m purchase of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton provided further evidence of the club's intent to bolster their rearguard.

Spurs then added veteran goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to their ranks before getting the chequebook out again to sign Sandro Tonali for £100m from Newcastle United and Mateus Fernandes for £85m from West Ham.

With six new players through the door - and the possibility of more additions despite their £237m spending spree - we've looked at how Tottenham may line up next season.

How Tottenham may line-up next season

4-2-3-1

Utilising the same shape De Zerbi implemented at the back end of the previous season, what is noticeable is the obvious enhancement in central midfield.

Tonali and Fernandes will come in for Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha, providing Tottenham with greater mobility, dynamism and creativity.

A straight back four does mean there's no place for Marcos Senesi and Cristian Romero, with the latter expected to depart N17 following the World Cup.

Tottenham XI: Kinsky; Porro, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Robertson; Tonali, Fernandes; Kudus, Maddison, Tel; Solanke.

3-4-2-1

De Zerbi frequently played with three central defenders during his stint with Marseille and given the personnel at his disposal at Tottenham, it would make sense if we see Senesi, Van Hecke and Van de Ven on the pitch at the same time.

That would enable Pedro Porro to play in a more natural wing-back role and provide Andy Robertson with the licence to get forward on the opposing flank.

With their presence on the sidelines, it would enable De Zerbi to deploy two 8s/10s behind the lone striker, which would suit James Maddison. Predominantly operating as a right winger during his time in the Premier League, Mohammed Kudus has been vocal of his preference to play in a more central role and this could enable him to showcase his playmaking abilities to greater effect.

Tottenham are reportedly preparing a bid for Bournemouth starlet Eli Junior Kroupi, who would slot straight into this XI if deal came to fruition.

Tottenham XI: Kinsky; Van Hecke, Senesi, Van de Ven; Porro, Tonali, Fernandes, Robertson; Kudus, Maddison; Solanke.
