How do bonus points work in Fantasy Premier League?

The countdown to the 2026/27 Fantasy Premier League season is on with this year's game set to be released in the coming days.

Erling Haaland was last season's top FPL points scorer with 239 points, narrowly ahead of Bruno Fernandes on 235 after his record-breaking season, with Arsenal's Gabriel rounding out the top three on 209 points.

It's perhaps no big surprise to see that Haaland, Fernandes and Gabriel also topped the bonus points charts with 43, 41 and 30, with Chelsea's Joao Pedro also earning 30 bonus points.

While goals, assists and clean sheets are easy to follow, bonus points are trickier to calculate, with points awarded for dribbles, clearances, tackles, shots and much more.

Dozens of metrics are totted up to allocate bonus points using the Bonus Points System (BPS). The three players with the highest BPS scores after a match receive bonus points.

The player with the best BPS score receives three FPL points, the second BPS score receives two and the third receives one.

If there's a tie for first place, the top two players receive three points each with third place still receiving one. If there's a tie for second place, first still receives three points with the next two players receiving two each. If there's a tie for third place, the top two players earn three and two points with the third-placed players receiving one each.

What are the changes to bonus points in 2026/27?

There are four changes to bonus points in the 2026/27 Fantasy Premier League game.

  • Removal of one-point loss for being tackled

  • One BPS for every three clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI), rather than every two CBIs

  • Goalkeepers to earn two BPS for every save, and an extra point for a save inside the box (previously goalkeepers wouldn't earn BPS for a save from a non-shot, e.g. a deflected cross)

  • Goalkeepers to earn one BPS for saving a 'big chance', but will now earn seven BPS for saving a penalty rather than eight
