Widely considered the two most prestigious races in the calendar for a staying chaser, capturing both events in the same season has proven to be an incredibly tough task.
Fans of National Hunt racing were understandably getting excited after newly-crowned Gold Cup winner, Inothewayurthinkin, was thrust to the top of the Grand National betting following his Cheltenham success.
However, trainer Gavin Cromwell confirmed that his stable star will swerve the Aintree showpiece in favour of a potential Punchestown Gold Cup bid.
This news put an end to the prospect of the double being completed in the same campaign for the first time in over 90 years.
Golden Miller remains the only horse to achieve the feat when he won both events all the back in 1934.
As well as this, Golden Miller is also the only horse ever to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup on five occasions.
Whilst not in the same season, 1975 saw L’Escargot become just the second horse to win both races as he denied Red Rum a third-consecutive National victory. This came off the back of multiple Cheltenham Gold Cup successes in both 1970 & 1971.
