Following Dan and Harry Skelton this summer has been like finding money in the street because the pair have been in fantastic form and it’s worth backing them to continue their hot streak with Pony Soprano.
He looks well capable of recording a second win over fences in the bet365 Novices' Limited Handicap Chase (13:45).
The seven-year-old has looked a better chaser than hurdler and is improving, too.
He recorded his first victory over fences in a course-and-distance handicap chase last month and ran to a similar level when second off this 7lb higher mark at Cartmel last time. He was beaten only by a course specialist there.
Now Pony Soprano returns to a track that we know suits him perfectly and, while he has a couple of talented rivals to compete against, their presence might just mean he goes off at a better price now.
Good ground suits the selection well and Pony Soprano has more to offer for his top yard in a race where he should be capable of dominating from an early stage. Those tactics are suited to this course well.
15:27 Uttoxeter - bet365 Summer Cup Handicap Chase - Twig @ 18/1
The bet365 Summer Cup (15:27) is one of the biggest jumps races of the British summer and Twig might be capable of adding victory in this to his win in one of the winter’s most prestigious races.
He was successful in the Becher Chase at Aintree in December and runs from just a 1lb higher mark now.
He evidently has a good chance judging on that handicap rating and hasn’t been running poorly since that Aintree success.
He has been out only three times subsequently and finished midfield in the Grand National on one of those occasions, while he was last seen taking a good third at Bangor-on-Dee last month.
Twig was no match for winner Somespring Special that day, but has a realistic chance of reversing the places with the runner-up Alien Storm. He has a 5lb turnaround at the weights with that rival this time.
He is 11 years old and doesn’t hold any secrets from the handicapper, but is as solid as they come and looks certain to make another bold bid. He is another prominent racer and I do like that around here.
16:03 Uttoxeter - bet365 Handicap Hurdle - Crebilly @ 7/2
The bet365 Handicap Hurdle (16:03) looks like a good opportunity for Harry Cobden to notch another winner for new boss JP McManus on board Crebilly, who he rode to victory at Market Rasen last time.
Crebilly was cashing in on a mark 14lb lower than his chase rating on that occasion and it’s therefore not difficult to see why just a 4lb rise in the weights for that success might underestimate his chance here.
He is evidently still well handicapped on his best chase runs and did well to win last time. He was short of room and hampered at a crucial stage turning into the straight, but ran on strongly to get up late and win in the final strides.
There is no doubt that he should have won by further and is better than the bare form.
This race is more competitive, but that might suit Crebilly because he is at his best when getting a pace to run at, and it’s worth taking a chance on him snapping a losing run for his trainers Jonjo and AJ O’Neill.
