The Joseph G Murphy-trained Cross Of Stars was never in winning contention on her debut at Punchestown earlier this month, but nothing was finishing better and she could well leave that form behind.
A 220,000gns daughter of first-season sire Baeed, she was largely ignored in the betting at 28/1 and appeared unlikely to finish better than midfield when turning for home with plenty to do.
However, she really took off entering the final furlong under Gary Carroll and came home less than five lengths behind the winner.
She was judged to have run to a Racing Post Rating of 76, which was a fair effort, but the way she hit the line suggests she's got far more ability than that bare figure implies.
16:40 Ayr: Lord Bertie @ 7/2
This has an open look to it, but David O'Meara's Lord Bertie has fallen to an attractive mark and ran his best race for some time when second at Haydock last month, so warrants a small interest.
The six-year-old has a modest strike rate in recent seasons and is alarmingly only 1-25 in handicap company.
However, he's now 8lb lower than when he took the scalp of Station X (who won the Ayr Silver Cup earlier this month) and Aberama Gold (the 2023 winner of the Stewards' Cup) on soft ground at Doncaster in October last year.
Encouragingly, he's performed well at Ayr in the past, including when chasing home solid yardstick Rousing Encore in this corresponding race last season.
There's a fair amount of rain in the forecast and any further softening of the ground is of no concern, with the gelding's form figures in four starts on heavy reading 2302.
20:30 Wolverhampton: Book Of Life @ 4/1
The Patrick Morris-trained Book Of Life has been running to a consistent level in defeat for the most part this season and looks to have been found a good opportunity to gain a deserved success.
The six-year-old is on a losing run dating back to February last year, but is rarely out of the money.
Book Of Life has also regularly run to Racing Post Ratings above his current official mark this term, including when finishing a luckless third over this course-and-distance last month.
He's 6lb below his last win and Paddy Bradley, who shows an impressive level stakes profit of £36.48 at this track, gets the leg up on the gelding for the first time.
