Mayor Of Maghera was picked up by R Mike Smith for only 2,600gns from Gerald Stephen Quinn in Ireland last month and that’s already looking like money well spent.
The four-year-old began his career with Philip Makin and showed fair form in his first season, winning a nursery over a mile at this venue and reaching a peak official mark of 73.
Regressive at three, he failed to take to hurdles for Quinn in Ireland earlier this year, but has been revitalised by a return to the Flat for new connections, keeping on steadily for a place on his stable debut over today’s course-and-distance before running to a similar level when fourth over a mile at Ayr.
He did show a tendency to lug right under pressure, but he was gaining at the finish without being given a hard time by Andrew Mullen. He remains 6lb below his nursery win and could potentially improve for the application of first-time cheekpieces.
15:37 Salisbury - Addison Grey @ 11/8
The Clive Cox-trained Addison Grey did well at three last year, but he’s taken his form to an even greater level this season following a gelding operation, going close on his reappearance at Newbury and chasing home the vastly progressive and subsequent Royal Ascot scorer Double Rush at Newmarket.
He wasn’t quite at his best on his return to the Berkshire venue last month, but it was a commendable effort in a race that simply wasn’t run to suit. Held up by Rossa Ryan, he was arguably the last off the bridle, but ultimately found himself with too much ground to make up on the leaders, the action having developed away from him towards the near side.
He finished off strongly once switched sharply right to the nearside fence inside the final furlong, beaten just a neck and neck for third. That was only his ninth career start and he retains significant potential.
17:30 Roscommon - Sea Of Rain @ 6/4
The market anticipated a good run from Jim Bolger’s Sea Of Rain on his debut over course-and-distance and, although she never looked like justifying her position at the head of the market, there were some encouraging signs from the daughter of Naval Crown, who hit the line strongly and seemingly with plenty left to give under Declan McDonogh.
A half-sister to three winners, the best of them being New Reality, who won over 1m4f and reached a peak official mark of 86, she went agonisingly close to breaking her duck at Leopardstown 12 days ago, losing out by a nose over 7f.
She ran around under pressure on that occasion, so could well benefit from her first-time cheekpieces.
