It’s another busy day of racing on Tuesday and Phill Anderson from the Racing Post supplies us with his best bets from across the cards.
Pontefract provides the action on the Flat during the afternoon while the day’s sole jumps offering comes from Southwell. Wolverhampton and Newcastle will be the venues for the evening’s all-weather.
19:45 Newcastle - Auntie Jo @ 7/4
20:15 Newcastle - Flying Fletcher @ 13/2
16:48 Pontefract - Pol Roger @ 6/1
19:45 Newcastle - Auntie Jo @ 7/4
Talented apprentice riders are often worth their weight in gold, particularly when you can find a good 7lb claimer and one that has made a really bright start to his career is Conor Whiteley, who is riding at a 17% strike-rate so far this campaign.
He gets the ride back on Auntie Jo for a resurgent David O’Meara team. The yard hadn't been in the best form over recent weeks but there have been major signs of a revival with three winners over the weekend.
Auntie Jo’s latest effort at Redcar is worth marking up for a number of reasons. She got within a length of the winner despite being held up off a fairly steady gallop and she also met more than her fair share of trouble.
She may be competing off the same handicap mark on Tuesday and the return to this course and distance looks like another factor in her favour, with her sole career win coming over Newcastle’s five furlongs.
A few of these like to go forward, so there’s every chance she’s going to get the decent gallop that she needs to be seen at her best and she looks like a worthy favourite in a weak event.
20:15 Newcastle - Flying Fletcher @ 13/2
Another horse that is going to appreciate a return to the North East on Tuesday evening is Flying Fletcher.
He was only beaten a length when last seen at Newcastle in March and he’s dropped 3lb since after some low-key turf runs.
All three of his previous wins have come at this venue, he’s now only lurking 1lb above his course and distance success in January and Ethan Tindall, who is another talented rider, is still able to claim a valuable 7lb off his back.
Flying Fletcher is the sort of horse that will have split turf/all-weather marks in the near future and given that he’s versatile with regards to tactics, there’s plenty in his favour from an each-way perspective with bet365 paying an extra place on the race.
16:48 Pontefract - Pol Roger @ 6/1
Michael Dods’ yard are really starting to hit some form and one that looks capable of outrunning his odds on Tuesday is Pol Roger.
He was only narrowly denied off marks in the mid 70s last summer, notably on rain-softened ground, and while the going is good-to-firm at the time of writing, there’s 10mm of rain due overnight.
Pol Roger shaped with enough promise to suggest he retains his ability at Thirsk on return, held up on a track that often favours those positioned prominently, and the yard’s horses often need their seasonal returns.
From his lowest mark in over two years, he could be hard to stop in what looks like a weak contest for the grade.
