The fourth and final day of York's Ebor Festival is coming up on Saturday, with the seven-race card featuring the Ebor Handicap and the Group 1 City Of York Stakes.
Racing Post tipster Robbie Wilders is on hand to provide three selections for day four of York’s Ebor meeting on Saturday.
13:50 York - Hankelow @ 6/1
15:35 York - Daiquiri Bay @ 10/1
17:20 York - Diego El Queso @ 11/2
13:50 York - Hankelow @ 6/1
I’m keen to take on Damysus in the Strensall Stakes, albeit his recent third to Juddmonte International winner Item at this track looks a lot better now.
Preference is for Hankelow, who we haven’t seen since the Prix du Jockey Club. Three-year-olds have won three of the past four runnings and Hankelow can be given a pass for his Jockey Club run on a surface which was faster than ideal. It was a messy race over a trip which probably stretched him.
Karl Burke has been waiting for the ground to ease for Hankelow, hence why we haven’t seen him for 83 days, and he’s finally getting a bit of juice underfoot.
This horse can clearly run well when fresh as he won a novice at this course on his debut and finished third to Rayif on very soft ground on his seasonal return in the French 2,000 Guineas.
Rayif won the Jacques le Marois last weekend and is now established as one of Europe’s best milers. Hankelow can start making up for lost time.
15:35 York - Daiquiri Bay @ 10/1
There are a stack of interesting horses in the Ebor and Daiquiri Bay is definitely one of those for Alan King.
Daiquiri Bay has turned a corner since being gelded and has won two ultra-competitive handicaps which have worked out really well this term.
King admitted he strongly considered withdrawing Daiquiri Bay ahead of his Copper Horse win at Royal Ascot due to the quick conditions, but his runner clearly handled the surface and a 5lb rise for that looks more than fair.
He is sired by New Bay, whose progeny tend to relish slower ground, and Daiquiri Bay gives the impression there is plenty more to come.
He’s been laser targeted at the race and proved his ability to act on the Knavesmire by finishing third in the Melrose on this card a year ago.
17:20 York - Diego El Queso @ 11/2
Diego El Queso has been a big improver this season and redemption awaits in the 1m2½f handicap after his desperately unlucky sixth in the Chesterfield Cup at Goodwood.
The son of Blue Point flashed home from an unpromising position under Colin Keane and hit the line like he was well ahead of his mark.
Nothing went right, while reopposing winner Al Aali got the breaks at the right times, and he’s much likelier to avoid any in-running trouble on York’s long straight.
My selection will have no worries about an easier surface, given he won on soft ground at Leopardstown in April, and a Group 3 entry next month highlights the regard in which he is held by Ger Lyons.
He is mega consistent and is bound to give punters a decent run for their money.
