Phill Anderson’s Newmarket Betting Tips for Saturday 10th October

There is more Group action at Newmarket coming up on Saturday, including the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at 15:00 and a typically competitive renewal of the Cesarewitch at 15:40.

Phill Anderson of the Racing Post supplies us with his best bets on day two of Newmarket’s Future Champions Festival.

13:15 Newmarket - Boiling Point @ 6/1

Boiling Point has form figures of 22113 on the Rowley Mile Course at Newmarket and while he’s not been at his best in his last couple of starts, a return to HQ may help spark a revival.

His career best came over this course and distance just over a year ago when taking out the Cambridgeshire and he has shown that he has retained plenty of that ability this campaign, which has included a Listed success at Goodwood.

He has had excuses on his last couple of runs with soft ground against him in the Celebration Mile before failing to see out 1m2f last time out at Goodwood when not seen to best effect, which was never going to be an ideal scenario for an out-and-out front-runner.

The five-year-old sets the standard in this on last season’s Cambridgeshire success and a couple of his main rivals have significant factors to overcome; a penalty for Haatem and more than a year off the track for the other Wathnan representative, Humidity.

The favourite at the time of writing (The Lost King) also has to step up on what he has achieved so far and therefore, there is a good argument to say that Boiling Point should not be fourth in the betting in a five-runner race given that he is a course specialist.

With bet365 offering a standout 6/1, Karl Burke’s runner looks like the value play in the race.

13:50 Newmarket - Apulia Bay @ 13/2

The Zetland Stakes has also attracted a small field with a chance taken on the progressive Apulia Bay.

Simon and Ed Crisford’s representative has been shaping like he’s going to relish a step up in distance all season and rallied really well at Newbury last time having looked like he was going to be well beaten two furlongs out.

This colt’s pedigree also suggests that 1m2f is going to be right up his street and it is worth noting that he went through the sale ring twice before his two-year-old campaign for a whopping 400,000gns as a foal before going for 600,000gns as a yearling.

He needs to go some to start confirming he is worth that sort of price tag but the yard is really flying with four winners in the last week (before the start of Friday’s racing) and he is another that looks overpriced at around 13/2 in just a six-runner heat.

15:40 Newmarket - High Fibre @ 22/1

Silvestre De Sousa has a an excellent record in the Cesarewitch having won three previous renewals and it is interesting that James Owen has employed his services on board High Fibre.

This seven-year-old achieved a useful level of form for Ralph Beckett a few years back before spending a couple of seasons over hurdles for Harry Fry.

He didn’t really manage to match the level of form he showed on the Flat for Fry but there have been some really promising signs he retains all of his old ability for his new connections, justifying strong market support to win a handicap on the July Course on his penultimate outing before hitting the crossbar in a competitive handicap at York.

He is officially 2lb well-in after that effort with the handicapper unable to touch his mark in the interim and there could easily be more to come for his new connections over this sort of trip so he makes each-way appeal at 22/1 with bet365 paying six places on the race.
