Jumps racing is back in the spotlight this weekend and Chepstow’s three-day Welsh Racing Festival gets under way with a cracking eight-race card on Friday.
Racing Post tipster Phill Anderson is on hand to provide his NAP and next best bet from the day’s action in Monmouthshire.
Lord Byron - 2/1
Rider | Harry Cobden |
Trainer | Faye Bramley |
Owner | J Carthy |
Age | 4 |
Overall Form | 4454-2 |
Faye Bramley has made a strong start to the season and she’s sent a competitive team of horses to Chepstow this weekend with seven entered at the time of writing.
The best chance of those has to be Lord Byron, who goes for the Persian War Novices’ Hurdle.
This Camelot gelding was highly progressive as a novice hurdler last term and while he didn’t manage to get his head in front, he was highly tried with two runs at Grade 2 level and a trio of outings in Grade 1 company.
The latest of those was a head defeat in the Grade 1 Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown where he had plenty to do from rear but ran on gamely to be narrowly denied.
That effort sets the standard on form and unlike his main rivals in this contest, Lord Byron has had a recent prep on the level where he ran as well as could be expected over an insufficient distance.
He left the impression he was still improving at the back end of last season and if he picks up where he left off in the spring, he’ll be tough to beat.

Le Beau Madrik - 5/1
Rider | Harry Skelton |
Trainer | Dan Skelton |
Owner | Alan Harte |
Age | 5 |
Overall Form | 211P1 |
Le Beau Madrik ran with plenty of promise when hitting the crossbar in bumpers and there has been no looking back over hurdles subsequently.
After making easy work of a couple of contests at Newcastle, he made a bad early mistake when stepped up to Graded company at Kelso, which he couldn’t recover from.
However, he couldn’t have been any more impressive when winning at Haydock at the back end of last season and his mark of 137 could underestimate that performance.
With bet365 offering five places on the race, Le Beau Madrik can be played each-way, and Harry Skelton choosing this unexposed sort over three stablemates counts for plenty.
Phill Anderson signed off September with a couple of winners including Alobayyah (recommended at 4/1) and Red Evolution (recommended at 5/1) at the Curragh. He also picked out Ballinea Star, who hit the frame as a 33/1 shot at the same venue.
