There is a top-class card at Ascot on Saturday with no fewer than five Group 1s on the agenda.
The QEII and Champion Stakes both look like stellar renewals and the Racing Post's Phill Anderson has selections and analysis for four of Saturday's races on Ascot's card.
14:05 Ascot - Kind Of Blue @ 10/1
Rider | Billy Loughnane |
Trainer | James Fanshawe |
Owner | Wathnan Racing |
Age | 5 |
Overall Form | 20-2051 |
Almeraq is a very short price for the Champion Sprint, particularly after such a big effort in very testing ground at Haydock last month and he looks worth taking on with an each-way selection.
Kind Of Blue is the obvious choice. This five-year-old got firmly back on track with a win on the all-weather last time out and he regularly comes good in the autumn, as was the case when he took out this race in 2024.
He is also highly effective at Ascot and with a fair amount of pace drawn across the track, this hold-up performer should get a decent gallop to aim at.
14:40 Ascot - Sparan Nua @ 10/1
Rider | Rossa Ryan |
Trainer | Jim Bolger |
Owner | Newtown Anner Stud Farm |
Age | 3 |
Overall Form | 113429 |
The fillies’ and mares’ also has an appealing look to it from an each-way perspective with Kalpana taking up a lot of the market and while she is certainly the one to beat, it is possible she will still be feeling the effects of a big run in the Arc.
Sparan Nua looks like the one to take her on with. She ran Kalpana mighty close at the Ebor meeting and would have won in another 20 yards, so Ascot’s stiff finish should play to her strengths.
The filly may have found her subsequent outing coming too soon when underperforming in France but she’s been freshened up since and looks worth chancing for a yard in flying form in recent weeks.
15:20 Ascot - Ten Bob Tony @ 7/1
Rider | Kieran Shoemark |
Trainer | Ed Walker |
Owner | TBT Racing |
Age | 5 |
Overall Form | 811442 |
This race has been the long-term plan for Ten Bob Tony since his Queen Anne success at Royal Ascot over this course and distance.
The five-year-old had always been marked down as a soft ground horse but he has shown that is not the case this season with his Royal win before several big runs in defeat at the top level.
This hold-up performer will really appreciate a return to Ascot where it is easier to come from behind, particularly on the straight mile and he is drawn next to the pace, therefore, everything points to a big run.
16:00 Ascot - Constitution River @ 6/1
Rider | |
Trainer | |
Owner | Tabor, Smith, Magnier and Westerberg |
Age | 3 |
Overall Form | -11133 |
There is no shortage of quality in this year’s Champion Stakes but the value could be with the Ballydoyle runner, Constitution River, given that Calandagan seems on the downgrade and Ombudsman arrives on the back of a lacklustre effort at York.
Constitution River followed up his French Derby success with a facile victory in the Eclipse and he has raced too close to a hot pace in two subsequent runs at York and Leopardstown.
The Irish Champion Stakes effort is worth marking up, doing easily the best of those that were close to the frenetic gallop and there’s a chance there’s still more to come from this three-year-old.
Conditions should also be in his favour and if he takes to Ascot, he should be firmly in the mix.
14:05 Ascot - Kind Of Blue @ 10/1
14:40 Ascot - Sparan Nua @ 10/1
15:20 Ascot - Ten Bob Tony @ 7/1
16:00 Ascot - Constitution River @ 6/1
Phill Anderson signed off September with a couple of winners including Alobayyah (recommended at 4/1) and Red Evolution (recommended at 5/1) at the Curragh.
He picked out Ballinea Star, who hit the frame as a 33/1 shot at the same venue and also picked out 25/1 High Fibre who finished fourth in last week’s Cesarewitch.
