Chantilly Horse Racing Betting Tips for Sunday 31st May

There are five meetings across Britain and Ireland on Sunday, but the highest quality action comes over in France where Chantilly hosts a top-class renewal of the Prix du Jockey Club as well as five other Group/Listed contests.

Racing Post tipster Gary Savage has an each-way fancy for the big one as well as two more tips on the undercard.

13:40 Chantilly - Cualificar @ 9/4

The Grand Prix De Chantilly is not the most demanding of Group Twos and looks at the mercy of Andre Fabre’s Cualificar who can take this on the way to establishing himself as a top-class four-year-old.

Brought along quietly at two, with only a couple of low-key outings, he made great strides very quickly in his three-year-old career, with the highlight being a narrow defeat in the Prix du Jockey Club here when he did well to almost get home from stall 12.

Put away for an autumn campaign, he produced a memorable performance in winning the Prix Niel from a pocket with a top-class turn of foot and was well-fancied for the Arc on the back of that.

Unfortunately, a poor draw at Longchamp was quickly compromised by a terrible passage through the race that saw him squeezed, shuffled back and pushed out wide under William Buick before coming home in his own time.

His master trainer feels he has unfinished business at the top level this year, and in the stable’s usual way he was reintroduced quietly when a half-length third in the Prix D’Harcourt in early April.

Fabre has taken this twice in recent years and previously with subsequent Arc winner Waldgeist and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Cualificar takes this en route to Group One targets.

14:53 Chantilly - Moojeed @ 7/1

An unusually small field for the Prix Du Gros-Chene, and a clear top-rated in Group One winner Sajir, but he looks better over further, with this race likely to set him up nicely for the QEII over 6f at Royal Ascot.

Afjan is clear next best on ratings but take them both on with less exposed fellow three-year old Moojeed from the all-conquering Francis Henri Graffard who wasn’t far behind Afjan on his seasonal debut.

That came after an interrupted two-year-old career, where he displayed plenty of speed in four relatively quick starts from April to July.

He won a Group Three on his third start before disappointing as favourite for the Prix Robert Papin on his final start, perhaps whatever kept him off the track for the rest of the season revealing itself there.

Whatever had kept him off, he returned with a promising display in the Prix Sigy over half a furlong further here last month, finishing two lengths behind Afjan, where he showed up well for a long way.

He was allowed to coast home once lack of race fitness told and with such a small margin to overcome and with the race sure to have brought him on he looks a value alternative.

15:30 Chantilly - Dolmalan @ 12/1

Assuming that it would have been impossible for Mikael Barzalona to jump off Daryz’s half-brother Daryzan, the other Aga Khan Stud representative Dolmalan looks the value play.

Although not quite as regally-bred as his owner-mate, names such as Dalakhani and Daylami still crop up in his pedigree and his short career to date has certainly brimmed with promise.

Only starting out on the racetrack in late November, he has struck twice at this course this year, at just shy of Sunday’s distance, with his latest success in a Listed contest a month ago stamping him as verging on top class.

Christophe Soumillon set slow fractions on Coolmore's Montreal that day, before kicking from the front, but Dolmalan came from last to first inside the last furlong and a half to claim the pacesetter on the line.

With Montreal reopposing and likely to help set the fractions for his stablemates from stall 3, the selection is nicely berthed in stall 6 to sit just off the leaders and can pounce late.

Barzelona’s choice Daryzan is undoubtedly a talented colt, maybe with more potential than Dolmalan, but he will have to be as talented as his sibling to win this race from stall 10 after only one start.
