There’s no shortage of action on ITV Racing this weekend, with races coming up from Carlisle, Beverley and Chester on Saturday, with the meetings from Thirsk and Nottingham providing more on Sunday.
Phill Anderson from the Racing Post supplies us with his best bets from across the Saturday cards, with two selections from Carlisle and one from Chester.
13:30 Carlisle - Castle Stuart @ 9/1
14:00 Carlisle - Fivethousandtoone @ 16/1
15:30 Chester - Lexington Jet @ 18/1
13:30 Carlisle - Castle Stuart @ 9/1
It looks like there’s going to be a fair amount of pace in Carlisle’s opener on Saturday afternoon and that should suit Castle Stuart who seems at his best when he gets a strong gallop to aim at.
The Fahey gelding came in for significant market support at York recently but raced too keenly in the early stages and wasn’t able to finish off his race as strong as looked likely a couple of furlongs out. However, the forecast set-up should help him settle better in the early stages in this contest.
He was only beaten half a length in a much stronger race than this at the Ebor meeting last year from a 3lb higher rating, so he’s slipped to a reasonable mark, and there have been signs he’s found his way again in both runs so far this campaign.
A return to quick ground could be the key to him getting his head back in front and the yard is starting to fire over the last 10 days or so, with seven winners from the last 49 runners at the time of writing.
At 9/1 with bet365 paying four places on the race, he makes plenty of appeal each-way.
14:00 Carlisle - Fivethousandtoone @ 16/1
Another horse that could get a race run to suit is Fivethousandtoone who has been running well in defeat since his reappearance.
He looked like he had a competitive Newcastle handicap in the bag before getting caught late last month and his subsequent run is worth excusing after a slow beginning put him on the back foot early.
A return to a stiff six furlongs is going to suit given that some of his career best form has come at Newmarket and Newcastle over this trip and David Probert taking over from an apprentice in the saddle looks like a positive.
While he’s not as good on turf as he is on all-weather, fast ground would help level the playing field and his turf mark reflects his inferiority on this surface. It’s another race with bet365 paying an extra place and he can outrun his price of 16/1.
15:30 Chester - Lexington Jet @ 18/1
Unlike Carlisle, it’s often a big plus to race on the speed at Chester and one that may be able to dominate from the front on the Roodee is Lexington Jet.
He’s ideally drawn in stall two for his preferred tactics and one of the best front running jockeys in the business, Silvestre De Sousa, takes over in the saddle.
The four-year-old set unsustainable fractions from the front when turned over on the all-weather last time out but he had been in cracking form prior to that run with three wins from his last four starts and he gives the impression that he has the speed for a return to seven furlongs.
The return to turf is the main question mark having shown little on this surface earlier in his career but he had excuses on a couple of those occasions and there’s plenty to like outside of that factor.
He’s a standout price of 18/1 with bet365 and he’s another that can go well from an each-way perspective.
