The former prime minister confirmed he would be staying on as a member of parliament having left Number 10 in July, but resigned as an MP on 1st September.
Holborn and St Pancras was established in 1983 and has always been a Labour stronghold. The seat was occupied by Frank Dobson from 1983 to 2015 when Starmer was elected, and Somalia-born Sagal Abdi-Wali, who arrived in the United Kingdom as a child refugee in the 1990s and was elected leader of Camden council in May, will stand for Labour.
Labour are expected to hold the seat, particularly given their slight resurgence since Andy Burnham assumed power, though they will face stiff opposition from the Greens.
After winning in 2019 with a majority of nearly 23,000, Starmer's majority was reduced to 11,500 five years later amid unrest regarding the party's stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict, with Andrew Feinstein standing as an independent.
Green leader Zack Polanski has been selected as the party's candidate and they are 13/5 to win the by-election, second favourites behind Labour at 2/7.
