Root and Brook were in imperious form as the Yorkshire duo each scored double centuries in a phenomenal innings.
Brook reached the 250 mark in just 282 deliveries, while Root swiftly surpassed his previous highest Test score of 254 before being dismissed for 262.
They eased past England's previous highest-ever Test partnership of 411, which was recorded by Peter May and Colin Cowdrey against the West Indies at Edgbaston in 1957.
Per the BBC, it's only the second time in Test history that England have had two double centurions in the same Test innings, with the feat previously accomplished by Graeme Fowler and Mike Gatting against India in 1985.
The 624-run stand of Sri Lankan pair Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene remains the highest partnership in Test history, a match that Sri Lanka won by an innings and 153 runs against South Africa in July 2006.
They surpassed the record which was previously set by compatriots Roshan Mahanama and Sanath Jayasuriya, who totalled 576 in a second-wicket partnership against India in 1997.
