Have Salford City ever played in League One?

Salford City have enjoyed a productive 2025/26 campaign and are one win away from earning a place in the third tier by winning promotion through the play-offs.

After just missing out last season, the League Two outfit have spent the majority of the campaign in and around the top seven and despite missing out on automatic promotion on the final day, they are now through to the play-off final at Wembley later this month.

Karl Robinson has produced an extremely consistent side at this level, but he will be rueing a run of four straight defeats in February which has ultimately cost them the luxury of not having to go through the lottery of the play-offs.

The Ammies gave themselves a real chance of finishing inside the top three by winning eight games across March and April, but they were left frustrated by a goalless draw at Crawley Town in their final fixture which left them one point behind third place Cambridge United.

It was a dramatic play-off semi-final two-legged tie against Grimsby Town at the Peninsula Stadium, but extra time proved to be the difference as Kallum Cesay forced the ball home in the 117th minute to keep Salford City's promotion hopes alive.

Have Salford City ever played in League One?

No, Salford City have never played in League One.

Despite a meteoric rise from winning Northern Premier League Division One in 2014/15 to reaching the EFL in 2918/19, Salford City have since struggled to make that next step.

Salford City finished in the top half in each of their first three seasons in League Two and then went one stage further by reaching the play-offs in 2022/23, only to lose on penalties to Stockport County in the semi-final.

The following season saw Salford spend the majority of the time towards the other end of the table, before they vastly improved in 2024/25 to finish in 8th.

Salford City's famous ownership group will be desperate to see their club break new ground and make the leap to the third tier by winning the play-off final against Notts County at Wembley on Monday 25th May.
