Wrexham are reportedly ready to submit an offer for Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, who looks set to leave the Stadium of Light this summer.
Coming through the youth ranks at Sunderland, Patterson was the club's number one from the second half of the 2021/22 season until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
The 26-year-old played a crucial role during that time to help the Black Cats climb from League One back to the Premier League and he would have hoped to have kept the gloves last term.
However, Sunderland brought in Robin Roefs last summer and he was immediately installed as first choice, demoting Patterson to back-up and limiting him to just one League Cup appearance in the first half of the season.
The English stopper spent the second half of the last campaign on loan at Millwall and he almost helped the club to promotion, as the Lions fell in the play-off semi-final to Hull City.
With Roefs impressing in the Premier League, Patterson looks like he will have to find an exit to increase his playing time and there are now reports suggesting Wrexham have joined the chase for his signature.
Wrexham narrowly missed out on a play-off place last season, as they finished seventh, and the club are working hard on strengthening their squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The goalkeeping department is seen as a key area to improve on, with Danny Ward, Callum Burton and Arthur Okonkwo the current first-team options available to manager Phil Parkinson.
The Red Dragons conceded 65 goals last term, the joint sixth-worst defensive record in the Championship, and they are hopeful the addition of Patterson can help shore things up at the back.
Sunderland have reportedly set an asking price of £7million for the goalkeeper, who is contracted to the Black Cats until the summer of 2028.
It is claimed Wrexham are exploring both permanent and temporary deals, although the club's preference would be for a season-long loan with an option or obligation to buy.
Wrexham can be backed at 16/1 to win the 2026/27 Championship and they are 5/1 to be promoted.
Parkinson's side begin the season with a trip to Cardiff City on 17th August. The visitors are 17/10 to claim the spoils, with the draw 12/5 and the Bluebirds priced at 27/20.
Millwall are also said to be in contact over a deal to bring Patterson back to The Den, although the £7m price tag is steep for the club and they may have to look elsewhere if they can't strike a loan agreement.
Wolverhampton Wanderers, who will be looking to earn an instant return to the Premier League, have been credited with an interest and are keeping a close eye on proceedings.
However, Wolves would need to get one of their senior goalkeepers off of their books before being able to consider an offer for Patterson.
