Sunderland close in on Malick Fofana after fee agreed

Sunderland look set for a busy end to the transfer window after a fee was agreed for Lyon winger Malick Fofana.

It has been a quiet summer regarding arrivals at the Stadium of Light, with Thomas Meunier, Dayann Methalie and Jules Ahoka all joining to bolster the defensive ranks.

Strengthening in attack was something head coach Regis Le Bris was hoping to do before Tuesday's 23:00 BST deadline, and it appears he will get his wish.

Premier League

Fofana deal close

It is being reported that a deal worth £30 million has been agreed with Lyon for the transfer of winger Fofana, with the Black Cats paying a fixed fee of £25.7m, plus £4.3m in add-ons.

The Belgium international would be quite the coup for Sunderland, with reports claiming Premier League champions Arsenal were also showing an interest.

Fofana is travelling to Wearside for a medical before then completing his switch from France to England, with a five-year contract expected to be signed.

The 21-year-old will bring plenty of excitement to the Sunderland side, with his pace, agility and close control making him a handful for defenders.

Fofana not the only arrival on deadline day

Along with Fofana, Sunderland are expected to complete the signing of Tottenham defender Kevin Danso before the deadline.

The Austria international travelled to the North East on Monday and is undergoing his medical, with a season-long loan with an option to make the move permanent agreed.

However, Danso's move is believed to be dependent on Tottenham bringing in a replacement.

Grealish move unlikely

Another player linked with Sunderland has been Manchester City's Jack Grealish, with the Black Cats having been in talks with the Citizens earlier in the transfer window.

Sunderland were hoping for a season-long loan deal, but City are only keen to allow the England international to leave on a permanent deal or a loan which has an obligation to buy.

Adingra heading for the Netherlands

While Sunderland are busy working on arrivals, one player set to leave the club on a temporary basis is Simon Adingra.

The winger, who is sidelined due to an injury, has agreed to join Ajax on a season-long loan.

He spent the second half of 2025/26 at Monaco, and his switch to the Eredivisie is not expected to include an obligation or option to buy.
