Roma v Fiorentina Prediction: Malen 10/11 to lead the way for Roma

Roma begin their New Serie A season with a Monday evening visit from a Fiorentina side who will be eager to improve on being embroiled in a relegation battle last season.

Roma appear to have made some excellent signings throughout the summer transfer window, bringing in players such as Donyell Malen - who spent the second half of last season on loan - Santiago Castro and Rodrigo Mora to the capital.

And head coach Gian Piero Gasperini will be looking to lead his side towards a Serie A title challenge this season having finished third last term.

Fiorentina have also splashed the cash this summer, signing no fewer than 12 players and, having finished 15th last season - their worst campaign for seven years - ambitions are much higher for 2026/27.

Roma v Fiorentina Prediction

Best Bet: Roma to win @ 7/10

Roma's third-place finish last term was their best in Serie A since the 2017/18 campaign. Gasperini was brought in to bring success to the capital club and there is a genuine hope that this season could bring a first title since 2001.

The Giallorossi have won three successive matches against Fiorentina, including a stunning 4-0 triumph in May.

La Viola began the 2026/27 campaign with a routine 4-1 win over Benevento in the Coppa Italia last week.

Given the significant investment that Roma have made to their squad, plus the fact Gasperini will be buoyed by a solid 2025/26 season, the capital club can get off to a winning start on Monday.

Alternative Bet: Donyell Malen anytime goalscorer @ 10/11

Perhaps the best piece of business Roma have done this summer was making Malen's move into a permanent one after the success of his loan spell last term.

Roma splashed out just £21m to sign the Dutchman from Aston Villa and that represents excellent business. Between January and May, Malen scored 14 goals in just 18 league games for the Italian side, adding one more in the Europa League for good measure.

While he didn't enjoy the best of World Cups, it is clear that Malen has found a manager in Gasperini who gets the best out of him.

He did only score once in pre-season, but Malen will be deployed as the lone striker against Fiorentina on Sunday and with some game time behind him, he can start the season with a bang.

  • Over 2 goals

The recent history of this fixture suggests that goals could be on the cards. Five of the previous seven meetings between these two teams have produced three or more goals, with Fiorentina winning 5-1 a couple of years ago.

Every single one of Roma's five pre-season matches featured three or more goals, with a total of 23 being scored.

Three of Fiorentina's friendly matches also saw three or more goals, while their opening match of the campaign in the Coppa Italia produced five.

Paulo Dybala is likely to start against La Viola and he will be looking to build on his pre-season form. The Argentinian scored five goals and grabbed two assists across his five friendly appearances.

A goal and assist against Borussia Dortmund last time out proved that he could go on to have a fantastic season with the Giallorossi.

With this being the opening league game of the season, expect it to be scrappy in stages and cards should certainly be plentiful.

Both teams have received at least two cards each in the last nine Serie A meetings between these two sides. Therefore, expect the referee to be kept busy in Rome.
