Portugal v Nigeria Prediction: 21/10 Fernandes to assist again

Portugal's World Cup preparations conclude with a friendly against Nigeria in Leiria on Wednesday evening and the star-studded European nation will be keen to showcase their trophy credentials.

Roberto Martínez's side recorded a 2-1 win over Chile on Saturday and a victory over Nigeria would set them up nicely for their World Cup adventure, where they are housed in Group K alongside Colombia, DR Congo and Uzbekistan.

Portugal's first group game takes place against DR Congo in Houston on Wednesday, 17 June and this is the final opportunity to fine-tune their plans.

Nigeria failed to qualify for the finals, finishing second behind South Africa in Group C before losing on penalties to DR Congo in the second round of qualifying.

That could lead to Eric Chelle using an experimental squad and last Wednesday they were held to a 2-2 draw against Poland in Warsaw, which suggests that they may struggle to live with the Selecao.

Portugal v Nigeria

Portugal v Nigeria Prediction

Best Bet: Portugal to win & both teams to score @ 15/8

Having not qualified for the World Cup, Nigeria will be keen to show that they belong there and they have some dangerous attacking players who could provide Portugal with a true test.

Star forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman are not available, but that provides the opportunity for others to shine and they still have a strong Premier League representation in Fulham trio Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze.

FC Porto's Terem Moffi and Akor Adams of Sevilla are two exciting strikers and last week's 2-2 draw with Poland shows that they do carry an attacking threat.

That means that the Super Eagles are unbeaten in 12 games in 90 minutes, having defeated Algeria in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in January before losing on penalties to hosts Morocco in the final four.

That shows their capabilities and they may be able to score in defeat against Portugal, who were 2-1 winners against Chile in their last friendly outing.

The Selecao are a class act, having lost only one of their last 12 matches, but they have conceded in four of their last six outings, including against Republic of Ireland and Armenia.

Alternative Bet: Bruno Fernandes to assist @ 21/10

Portugal's midfield is truly elite with Paris St-Germain's UEFA Champions League-winning pair Vitinha and Joao Neves ably supported by Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva.

Fernandes had a stellar season in the Premier League with Manchester United, scoring nine goals and grabbing a league record 21 assists to inspire his side to a third-place finish.

The Red Devils midfielder looks like Portugal's chief creator and he could get another assist against Nigeria.

Fernandes has 29 goals and 26 assists in 88 caps for Portugal and he has seven goal contributions in his last four international appearances.

Portugal v Nigeria Bet Builder Tip

  • Over 2.5 Portugal goals

  • Bruno Fernandes to score or assist

  • Akor Adams 1+ shots on target

    Pays 11/2

Portugal can be difficult to stop when they get on a roll and they should be able to put three or more past Nigeria, who have conceded twice in friendlies with Poland and Jordan in 2026.

Fernandes should have a starring role to play, having racked up 30 goal contributions in 35 Premier League appearances for Manchester United this season.

With no Osimhen or Lookman to call upon, Adams could be the chief scoring threat for Nigeria and he has five goals in his first 14 caps for the Super Eagles.
