Wrexham have confirmed the departure of striker Paul Mullin after unforgettable years at the Dragons.
Mullin signed for then non-league Wrexham in 2021 on a free transfer from Cambridge United and would go on to score 110 goals in 172 games in all competitions during his five years with the north Wales club.
He helped end the 15-year EFL absence as Wrexham won the National League in 2023 and would play his part in further promotions up to the Championship despite injuries curtailing his on-field time.
Mullin struck up quite the relationship with the Wrexham supporters as well as co-owners and Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, becoming a cult hero at the Racecourse Ground.
He spent last season out on loan with Wigan Athletic and Bradford City and, despite having a year left on his deal, Wrexham say there has been a "mutual termination" of Mullin's contract.
"This might be the end for me as a player, but there's not a chance it's the end of my love and affection for the club," Mullin wrote on social media.
Boss Phil Parkinson added: "This settlement enables him to take his time and find the right club for him, going forward."
We've assessed some of the possible options the Liverpool-born forward might be presented with as he weighs up his next move.
Last summer Mullin agreed a season-long loan move to Wigan in League One and he found the net five times in 26 appearances for the Latics, but his deal was cut short in January.
Gary Caldwell's side finished 16th in the third tier and were never able to form a challenge for the play-offs.
Wigan scored just 49 goals in 46 League One games last season and a fully fit Mullin could be viewed as a welcome permanent addition at the Brick Community Stadium.
Mullin's contract at Wrexham was lucrative, reported to be close to £6,000 per week, and it's likely he will have to accept reduced terms wherever he goes next, which could pique the Latics' interest in a player with an established connection to the club now.
After his loan at Wigan ended, Mullin spent the second half of the 2025-26 season at Bradford City.
He failed to score in nine games for the Bantams as the Valley Parade side finished fourth in League One before losing out to Bolton Wanderers in the play-off semi-finals.
Bantams boss Graham Alexander has already secured one summer signing as goalkeeper Jon McCracken joined from Scottish Premiership outfit Dundee, while midfielders Max Power and Jenson Metcalfe have left the club.
Bolton followed their dismissal of Bradford by winning the League One play-off final 4-1 against Stockport County at Wembley in May.
Portuguese forward Ruben Rodrigues netted a brace, while another former Wrexham goalscorer - Sam Dalby - was also on target for the Trotters.
Following an eight-year absence, Wanderers are bound for the Championship once more and Mullin was linked with a move to Steven Schumacher's side in January, though a concrete approach failed to materialise.
A return to the U's could be an ideal scenario as it was here that his career essentially took off.
Mullin spent just one full season at the Abbey Stadium after signing in the summer of 2020, but he scored 32 goals and was named League Two Player of the Season.
Cambridge have just secured promotion to League One via the play-offs and boss Neil Harris may see free agent Mullin as a signing worth investigating.
He is a proven goalscorer at League One level and, given how things panned out for him at Wrexham, his decision to move on in July 2021 hasn't caused any hurt.
Given his close ties to Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, a move to the MLS is sure to be mooted.
His part in the Welcome to Wrexham series raised his profile and Mullin made a cameo appearance in a Deadpool movie alongside Reynolds.
Marketability has often been something Inter Miami place stock in, could Mullin be targeted to join Lionel Messi and company at the Herons?
Time will tell but his profile in the United States, along with his Hollywood connections, could work in his favour.
