'None shall pass' appears to be the overriding motto Scott Parker's Burnley are approaching Championship matches with this season.
As things stand, Burnley have conceded a mere 10 goals in 36 league matches, leaving the Lancashire outfit on course to scoop a number of English football records this term.
We examine which records the promotion-chasing Clarets could be in line to break in this remarkable campaign.
Burnley have kept 26 clean sheets in 36 Championship matches so far in the 2024/25 season.
Season | Club | Total goals conceded |
2020/21 | Watford | 30 |
2005/06 | Preston | 30 |
2015/16 | Middlesbrough | 31 |
2010/11 | QPR | 32 |
(Stats according to Transfermarkt.co.uk).
The record for fewest goals conceded in a Championship season is currently jointly held by Watford and Preston, who shipped 30 goals each in the 2020/21 and 2005/06 campaigns respectively.
Watford's watertight rearguard helped them to automatic promotion in 2021, finishing in second place behind champions Norwich City.
Billy Davies' Preston side of 2005/06 were unable to secure promotion despite their robust defence, placing fourth to reach the play-offs before bowing out against Leeds United in the semi-finals.
As things stand, as the 46-game 2024/25 Championship season hurtles towards its conclusion, Burnley are primed to shatter this existing record of 30 goals conceded.
Season | Goalkeeper | Club | Clean sheets |
2024/25 | James Trafford | Burnley | 26 |
2017/18 | John Ruddy | Wolves | 24 |
2010/11 | Paddy Kenny | QPR | 24 |
2005/06 | Carlo Nash | Preston | 23 |
2015/16 | Dimitrios Konstantopoulos | Middlesbrough | 22 |
Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford has already broken the Championship record for most clean sheets in a season held by Wolves' John Ruddy and Paddy Kenny of QPR, who both accrued 24 in the 2017/18 and 2010/11 campaigns respectively.
Ruddy's Wolves achieved Championship promotion as league winners in 2017/18 with a superb squad led by Nuno Espirito Santo storming to the title, whilst Paddy Kenny was part of an impressive QPR side who were also promoted as champions under Neil Warnock in 2010/11.
A youth product of Manchester City, Trafford was England U21s' number one as Lee Carlsey's Young Lions won the Euros in Georgia and Romania in 2023 - with the 6ft 6ins shot-stopper inspirationally saving an injury-time penalty in the final against Spain.
Whether or not Burnley achieve Championship promotion this term, it appears increasingly inevitable 22-year-old Trafford will be a Premier League goalkeeper next season.
