Panama are seen as outsiders in Group L at the World Cup but they could spring a surprise when they meet Ghana in Toronto on Wednesday night.
The Ghanaians failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and their squad is lacking some of its usual flair heading into this tournament.
The absence of Tottenham’s Mohammed Kudus is a blow for the Black Stars, and they meet a Panama side that deserve a little more credit after some impressive results over the last couple of years.
Best Bet - Draw or Panama @ 4/6
Alternative Bet - Both teams to score @ 19/20
Bet Builder - Elisha Owusu and Anibal Godoy to be booked @ 16/1
Best Bet: Draw or Panama @ 4/6
With the three top sides in North America all qualifying for this tournament as hosts, Panama’s exploits in qualifying have been undervalued.
They made the last eight at the 2024 Copa America, beating the USA and Bolivia before losing to Colombia. They also made the final of the CONCACAF Nations League, once again beating the US before a defeat to Mexico in the final.
Panama didn’t lose any of their four fixtures at last summer’s Gold Cup, exiting on penalties in the last eight. They went unbeaten with seven wins from 10 in qualifying, and they’ve suffered only two defeats across their last 18 matches.
Panama’s 6-2 defeat by Brazil wasn’t as one-sided as the scoreline suggests, with Brazil recording 12 shots on target to Panama’s nine.
Meanwhile, Ghana were denied a much-needed victory in their final World Cup warm-up game, as they conceded a late equaliser in a draw with an understrength Wales side.
Ghana had entered that game on the back of five consecutive defeats, not helped by their AFCON absence, and their decision to new head coach Carlos Queiroz has had little time to prepare.
Queiroz was appointed in April, taking over from Otto Addo, who was sacked after friendly defeats to Germany and Austria.
With Ghana winless in six, Panama are capable of picking up at least a point given their own strong run of form.
Alternative Bet: Both teams to score @ 19/20
While Panama are hard to beat, they’ve not exactly been hard to break down of late.
They have played seven games in 2026, failing to keep a clean sheet in all of those contests. Six of those matches have finished with both teams scoring, including their last five.
Ghana have scored in clashes with Austria, Germany, and Wales in 2026, but they have also struggled at the back with no clean sheets in their last six assignments.
They could be vulnerable at the back against a Panama side that has scored in 11 of their last 12 matches.
Elisha Owusu to be booked
Anibal Godoy to be booked
Pays 16/1
There are two standout options in the card markets here, with Ghana’s Elisha Owusu picking up seven cautions in Ligue 1 last term.
He was booked twice in Ghana’s qualifying campaign, and the midfielder also had his name taken in their defeat to Germany in March.
We could see a midfield battle between him and Panama’s Anibal Godoy, who finished qualifying with four bookings.
He picked up a booking against South Africa in March, and the San Diego FC player has three cautions in MLS this term.
