Chelsea got their Premier League season off to a winning start at Fulham on Monday but the 3-2 success at Craven Cottage raised major doubts about the suitability of Robert Sanchez as first-choice goalkeeper.
New Blues boss Xabi Alonso has spent big this summer on reinforcements but it now looks as though signing a goalkeeper will be the story that dominates the final days of the transfer window at Stamford Bridge.
Sanchez took criticism for his part in both of Fulham's goals. He allowed Josh King's low strike to go straight through him and then palmed a shot into a dangerous area for Gonzalo Garcia to score.
King's goal was the lowest-rated shot to result in a goal based on expected goals on target (xGoT) across the first weekend of Premier League action.
Alonso defended his goalkeeper post-game but his earlier assertion that "the players need to show me" what they are capable of rings true.
With that in mind, we have taken a look at five alternatives Chelsea could sign before the transfer window shuts next week.
Emi Martinez
Argentina's 2022 World Cup-winning netminder, Emi Martinez is well-versed in the Premier League and surplus to requirements at Aston Villa.
Press reports suggest that Villa would part with Martinez for less than £10m if a deal can be brokered this week.
He has the experience in his locker and would be a short-term fix at 33 years old, but Alonso has demonstrated this summer he isn't afraid to bring in a veteran and Martinez would be a strong presence in the dressing room from the off.
Unai Simon
Unai Simon succeeded Martinez as the number one goalkeeper for the World Cup winners as Spain imperiously captured the crown this summer. In doing so, he kept Arsenal's David Raya as his understudy.
The Athletic Club stopper has lots of experience and has just turned 29. He has played in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League and won the Golden Glove this summer with seven clean sheets in the expanded World Cup.
Diogo Costa
He sounds a little like Chelsea icon Diego Costa but the Portuguese keeps goals out instead of scoring them.
His senior career has so far involved only Porto and he is closing in on a half-century of international caps.
Costa is regarded as a superb shot-stopper and has an admirable record for saving penalties. He is just 26 years old and would be a long-term solution but also a costly investment.
Gregor Kobel
Borussia Dortmund's Gregor Kobel has been linked with Chelsea in the past. The Swiss international has played in a UEFA Champions League final at Wembley.
Last season Kobel earned 15 clean sheets in the Bundesliga and, at 28, he is entering the prime years of his career as a goalkeeper.
Kobel has been at Dortmund for five years and cost the club €15m from domestic rivals Stuttgart. It could cost Chelsea twice that to lure him to London.
Marco Carnesecchi
Brighton stopper Bart Verbruggen is another option, but a move for a Premier League number one could be tricky and so Atalanta's Marco Carnesecchi is an alternative.
He was linked with Chelsea earlier in the summer and is also reported to be on Bayern Munich's radar.
Carnesecchi would be a costly addition in all probability but Chelsea have already lured young defender Marco Palestra from the Bergamo club this summer so the lines of communication are open.
He had 18 clean sheets across all competitions last season and was rated to have saved La Dea more than 8.5 goals over the course of the season in becoming their player of the year.
