Crystal Palace were rocked by a 5-0 defeat to arch-rivals Brighton last week, but they managed to steady the ship with a 2-2 UEFA Europa League draw with Besiktas on Thursday.
That should boost the Eagles' confidence for the visit of Newcastle United, who need to get their away form in order after successive 4-1 Premier League losses at Leeds United and Coventry City and will be conscious that they have tasted glory just once in their last 12 visits to Selhurst Park.
Best Bet - Crystal Palace to win @ 19/10
Alternative Bet - Jean-Philippe Mateta to score at any time @ 11/10
Bet Builder - Over 2 goals, Joe Willock 2+ shots and Yoane Wissa to be booked @ 15/2
Best Bet: Crystal Palace to win @ 19/10
Crystal Palace were shell-shocked by their 5-0 defeat at Brighton with three of the Seagulls’ goals coming in the first 10 minutes, but a 2-2 draw in the UEFA Europa League at Besiktas would have given them a boost.
A trip to Turkey is always a test and after three away games in the space of a week, Pierre Sage’s side will be delighted to be back at Selhurst Park, where they last beat Nottingham Forest 3-1.
They take on a Newcastle side who have demonstrated their frailty on the road with 4-1 defeats to Leeds and Coventry in recent weeks, while a 1-0 home loss to Aston Villa was also a blow, so this could be a match where Palace exorcise their demons and get back on the winning trail.
Alternative Bet: Jean-Philippe Mateta to score at any time @ 11/10
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored his first goal of the season in the 2-2 draw with Besiktas and it could have proved timely as fellow striker Jorgen Strand Larsen was injured on the trip to Turkey.
Mateta was sidelined at the start of the season with a hamstring injury, but he brings an extra dimension to the Palace attack which will be a big boost for manager Pierre Sage.
The France international scored 12 goals in the league for the Eagles last season and can be a thorn in the Magpies’ side again, having scored both goals as a substitute in the 2-1 win Palace enjoyed the last time they entertained the Tynesiders in April.
There looks a strong chance there will be plenty of goals in this one as both teams look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League.
Five of Newcastle’s seven league matches this season have featured at least three goals and the same can be said of all but one of the 11 occasions that Palace have been in action this term, so this encounter could get a bit lively.
Newcastle need to get themselves together after being outclassed on the last two occasions they were on the road, and Joe Willock could play a prominent role.
Willock has had 15 goal attempts in his four away appearances this season and should be backed to have at least two shots at Selhurst Park.
His team-mate Yoane Wissa could do well to stay away from the referee’s attention, having already picked up three bookings this season.
He also committed four fouls in the 4-1 defeat at Leeds when he was fortunate not to earn another yellow card, and he may not be as lucky this time.
