Australia v Egypt World Cup Prediction: 6/4 Pharaohs ready to progress

Having failed to get past the groups in their previous World Cup appearances, reaching the last 32 would have been the initial aim for Egypt and they came through their section in decent shape with draws against Belgium and Iran and a 3-1 win over New Zealand.

There looks to be potential for the Pharaohs to kick on now that they have reached the last 32 and a tie against Australia could have been a lot tougher.

The Socceroos caused a stir when they beat Turkey in their first match, but a failure to subsequently score against the USA and Paraguay has left them with questions to answer.

Australia v Egypt

Australia v Egypt Prediction

Best Bet: Egypt to win @ 29/20

Australia have never won a knockout game at the World Cup and that record looks set to continue when they lock horns with Egypt.

Their opening 2-0 win over Turkey made everyone at the tournament sit up and listen, but there has been little to cheer since as they fell to a 2-0 reverse against co-hosts USA and then their goalless draw with Paraguay failed to catch light as the stalemate suited both parties.

There looks to be more scope for the Egyptians to kick on and they have key attacking players in Mo Salah and Manchester City's Omar Marmoush.

Those two can help Egypt build upon an unbeaten group stage where they were held to a draw by Belgium after conceding an own goal and beat New Zealand 3-1 before another draw with Iran was enough to send them through.

It does not look set to be a high-scoring game, but the Pharaohs can be expected to come out on top.

Alternative Bet: Mostafa Ziko to have a shot on target @ 11/8

While most eyes will be on the Egyptian big names, the Pharaohs are not a two-man team and there are others apart from Salah and Marmoush who can make a big impression.

One of those is Mostafa Ziko, who has had seven shots in his three appearances, scoring in the 3-1 victory over New Zealand.

Two of those efforts have been on target and he looks a decent price to test the Australian goalkeeper.

Australia v Egypt Bet Builder Tip

  • Under 2.5 goals

  • Aiden O’Neill to be fouled over 1.5 times

  • Over 8.5 corners

    Pays 13/2

Australia have had trouble making an impression in the final third and it looks unlikely that there will be plenty of goals in this one.

Egypt look the more likely winners here, but their 3-1 victory over New Zealand has been the only occasion in their last five matches that they have scored more than once, so there looks a strong chance there will not be more than two goals.

Australian midfielder Aiden O'Neill has been fouled six times so far in this World Cup with four of those offences coming in the defeat to the USA.

He should find himself in the thick of the action once again and there looks a strong chance he could be fouled more than once again.

There also looks to be a strong chance that there will be plenty of corners in this Arlington contest.

The Socceroos have earned an average of four flag-kicks per game in the tournamen, while Egypt have contributed to some hefty totals by having seven against Belgium and eight against Iran, so there could be at least nine in total in the contest.
