Five contenders to be the next Livingston manager

We take a look at the potential candidates to be the next Livingston manager following Marvin Bartley's resignation.

Bartley took over as Livingston manager in February after former boss David Martindale moved upstairs to a new Sporting Director role.

The 39-year-old only lasted three months in the role and he leaves following the club's relegation from the Scottish Premiership last weekend.

Veteran midfielder Scott Arfield will take charge of the final three games of the season as the club looks to improve on their tally of just two league wins before the end of the current campaign.

Here are our top five contenders to become the next permanent Livingston manager.

Next Livingston Manager Contenders

Scott Brown

Celtic legend Scott Brown left his job as Ayr United manager by mutual consent at the end of March.

Brown also has experience in England with Fleetwood Town and he will be keen to prove that he has what it takes to be a successful manager.

Livingston will be looking to bounce straight back next season and Brown would surely jump at the chance of a promotion challenge.

Paul Gallagher

Paul Gallagher's time at Barrow only lasted five matches before he was dismissed in February following defeats in all of those fixtures.

He is currently a first-team coach at Leyton Orient and he has also been part of the backroom team at Preston North End and Stoke City.

The one-time Scottish international has developed plenty of coaching experience and will want to prove himself after a difficult time with Barrow.

Mick Kennedy

Mick Kennedy was recently linked with the position at Ayr before the club opted for former Scotland left-back Gary Naysmith.

Kennedy has led East Kilbride to the Scottish League Two title this season and is believed to be open to the idea of moving on to a higher level.

Astonishingly, Kennedy has won nine league titles in 10 seasons and he has worked wonders further down the pyramid.

David Hopkin

It would be a fairytale return if Livingston could lure former boss David Hopkin back into management.

Hopkin famously guided Livingston to back-to-back promotions in 2017 and 2018, before departing at the end of his contract.

He hasn't been involved in management since March 2021 and while he is currently a scout for Crystal Palace, he may feel that he has unfinished business.

James McPake

Former Dundee and Dunfermline manager James McPake is believed to be wanting a return to the dugout.

McPake guided Dundee to promotion from the Championship in the 2020/21 season, before being sacked in February 2022 as the club struggled in the top-flight.

He also led Dunfermline to promotion from League One to the Championship before leaving the club in December 2024.
