British GP Driver Ratings: Leclerc reigns supreme at Silverstone

Charles Leclerc secured his first win of the season at the British Grand Prix as championship leader Kimi Antonelli finished outside of the points due to late reliability issues.

Ferrari duo Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton made a rapid start from the grid to pass pole sitter Antonelli, but where Leclerc was able to surge into the distance, Hamilton was reprimanded for a false start and handed a five-second penalty.

Antonelli eventually repassed Hamilton but struggled to reduce the deficit to Leclerc out front, only for the championship leader to seize the momentum of the race by eking all of the life out of his medium tyres, enabling him to pit 10 laps later than Leclerc.

The Italian then proceeded to make inroads on Leclerc's advantage and trailed the Monegasque by just three seconds when he reported an issue with his Mercedes.

Forced to pit twice as Mercedes sort to rectify the problem, it emerged Antonelli's left wheel shield failed, which caused him severe handling issues as he plummeted to tenth.

Eager to continue in an attempt to salvage any crucial points, Antonelli's misfortune continued as he received a penalty for exceeding track limits and his woes were further exacerbated when the race finished under a safety car after Max Verstappen veered into the gravel at Stowe with six laps remaining.

Ferrari decided to pit both of their cars during the safety car period, and although Leclerc's commanding advantage ensured he retained the lead, George Russell got the jump on Hamilton to claim second.

Take a look at our driver ratings for the British Grand Prix.

British Grand Prix driver ratings

Charles Leclerc - 9

After an incredibly frustrating few weeks, it's all appeared to click for Leclerc following the sprint race and the Monegasque demonstrated far superior pace to Hamilton.

Would he have triumphed if Antonelli hadn't suffered his mechnical issue? The rate at which the Italian was catching suggests it was unlikely, but sometimes you have to make your own luck and Leclerc would have won by a monstrous margin were it not for the intervention of the safety car at the end.

George Russell - 7

Russell lacked the pace of his team-mate throughout the weekend but still managed to pull off a vital podium finish which is imperative at this stage of the title battle.

Lewis Hamilton - 7

A 16th podium at his beloved Silverstone, although his despondent body language suggested he was extremely disappointed. A false-start penalty set the tone for a tough afternoon and he struggled to match the pace of Leclerc.

Lando Norris - 7.5

Extracted the maximum from his MCL40 and kept himself out of trouble to score a handy amount of points given McLaren's performance deficit to their rivals.

Isack Hadjar - 7

A lock-up enabled his team-mate to execute an easy pass, but Hadjar was 30 seconds behind Verstappen prior to the Dutchman's crash. A long stop didn't aid his cause.

Liam Lawson - 8

An excellent weekend for the Kiwi, who demonstrated excellent pace all weekend and thoroughly deserved a big points haul.

Arvid Lindblad - 8

A fourth double points finish this season for the Racing Bulls as Lindblad brought his car home in an excellent P7, where he demonstrated speed and consistency yet again.

Gabriel Bortoleto - 8

An overdue points finish was reflective of the strides Audi have taken with their package. Bortoleto recovered from a difficult start and could have possibly finished fifth if Audi didn't decide to pit him before the safety car.

Franco Colapinto - 8

A terrific drive from the Argentine as he rectified his mistake in qualifying by climbing 10 positions and banking two invaluable points for Alpine.

He showed aggressiveness and precision early on to overtake Bottas and Hulkenberg before keeping his team-mate at bay in the latter stages.

Pierre Gasly - 7

Hindered by a slow stop which resulted him falling behind Colapinto, but the Frenchman lacked the pace to trouble Bortoleto and the Racing Bulls ahead.

Oscar Piastri - 5

A Sunday which he will want to forget in a hurry. Sandwiched by both Racing Bulls, he sustained front wing damage which resulted in him tumbling down the order and Piastri was unable to mount a recovery.

Carlos Sainz - 6

With the exception of nearly taking out his former colleague Leclerc under blue flag conditions, it was a clean drive from the Spaniard, who is evidently frustrated by the lack of progress at Williams.

Ollie Bearman - 6

The Briton's race was compromised on the opening lap following a collision with Alex Albon.

Esteban Ocon - 6

Looked set to finish ahead of Bearman until a 16-second pit stop ruined his race.

Sergio Perez - 6

Think Perez will be a little more concerned with the result at the Azteca this evening rather than his own finish at Silverstone, but the Mexican was fighting with the Haas to show the strides Cadillac have taken.

Kimi Antonelli - 8

Swamped by the Ferraris after a poor start, Antonelli appeared to be on course to challenge Leclerc for the race victory when his race was obliterated by a left wheel shield failure.

Luck was most certainly not on his side as the Italian received a reprimand for exceeding track limits amid severe handling issues.

Valtteri Bottas - 5

A largely anonymous afternoon for the Finn as question marks concerning his future continue to linger.

Fernando Alonso - 4

This grading is by no means a reflection of Alonso's drive and more a review of the revolting machinery he tried to navigate around Silverstone. The Aston Martin looks undriveable.

Lance Stroll - 3

A repeat of the aforementioned comment. There's simply nothing Stroll can do in that car.

Did Not Finish

  1. Alex Albon - 3 - Ruined Bearman's race by spinning the Briton at the start before he was forced to retire.

  2. Max Verstappen - 6.5 - Was in podium contention when he dramatically veered off into the gravel at Stowe in an incident which had alarming similarities to his retirement in Austria.

  3. Nico Hulkenberg - N/A - The German's Audi ground to a halt at Copse with a third of the race remaining.
