Exeter Chiefs star Tom Hooper has extended his contract with the Gallagher Prem club until 2028, before committing to a return to Australia.
The losing Gallagher Prem finalists will already be without another of their Australian stars from last campaign going forward, with Len Ikitau returning to his homeland this summer.
There were worries in the West Country that Hooper could be set to follow his countryman out of the door, however this announcement has quelled any speculation.
I'm really happy to have my long-term future secured with a move back to Australia in the not-too-distant future
Tom Hooper on his decision to sign his latest deal
As a result of the announced deal, the 25 year-old will remain with the Chiefs until 2028, at which point he will return to Australia, signing for Super Rugby Pacific side Queensland Reds until 2030.
Despite last season being his first in England, Hooper performed exceptionally for the Chiefs and was one of their talismen as they recovered from a ninth place finish the season before, to reach the Prem's showpiece final - ultimately losing to Northampton Saints.
Hooper's initial contract at Sandy Park ran until the end of the 2026/27 season, with this extension keeping him with the club for one extra season.
Speaking on Exeter's statement, Hooper said: "I'm thoroughly enjoying my time in Exeter and am focused on continuing to improve my game there before returning to Australia and linking up with Queensland."
"In the short-term, my priority is to continue working hard with the Wallabies where I'm incredibly hungry to contribute on and off the field as we continue to build our game as a group" he continued.
Exeter Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter said: "We completely understand Tom's reasons for returning to Australia,"
"Until then, we will enjoy the next two years as Tom continues to develop his game in our domestic and European competitions."
Rugby Australia's director of high performance Peter Horne stated: “Tom's return to Australian Rugby is a real coup for all supporters of the game in this country,”
"He's someone who works incredibly hard on his craft and has already shown the impact he can have at the highest level" he added.
To date, Tom Hooper has made 23 appearances for his country since making his debut in 2023 and is available for international selection still, despite his decision to remain in Europe.
