The domestic blue-riband division behemoths will lock-horns in what promises to be a pulsating showdown at the Co-op LIVE this evening with Wardley's WBO belt on the line.

Whilst the victor has yet to be determined, we already know that both of the fighters names will be etched into British boxing history as they prepare to become just the seventh pair from our shores to have battled it out for coveted world championship gold.

Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno broke new ground when they squared-off for the WBC belt back in 1993, with numerous other big name stars, including Wardley and Dubois, following in their footsteps over the last three decades.

Lennox Lewis vs Frank Bruno (WBC - October 1993)

Riddick Bowe's decision to vacate his WBC strap in 1993 paved the way for Lennox Lewis to be crowned world champion, with the hall-of-famer subsequently making a successful first defence against Tony Tucker.

A more challenging assignment lay in wait in October 1993 however, with domestic foe Frank Bruno attempting to become world champion for the first time at Cardiff's National Stadium.

A back and forth affair eventually culminated in a brutal stoppage victory for Lewis, who landed a sledgehammer like looping left which rocked Bruno to his core.

Lennox Lewis vs Henry Akinwande (WBC - July 1997)

Just under four years later, Lewis was involved in his second all-British world title showdown.

After being dethroned of his WBC belt by Oliver McCall in September 1994, the Londoner bounced back with a sequence of successful knockout victories to tee-up a rematch with the American, whom he brutally stopped just two rounds in.

That victory set-up a clash with Henry Akinwande five months later, and although it proved to be a dour affair, Lewis eventually reigned supreme via disqualification after his opponent was adjudged to have held the champion in clinches far too often for the official's liking.

David Haye vs Audley Harrison (WBC - November 2010)

Thirteen years had elapsed between Lewis' success over Akinwande and David Haye's TKO victory over Audley Harrison.

Haye's rise to the summit of the blue-riband division was stupendous, first taking down the giant Nikolay Valuev in his Russian backyard and then breezing past the game American John Ruiz in Manchester.

Haye, the former cruiserweight king, made mincemeat of his British opponent at the MEN Arena, securing a comfortable victory in just the third round with Harrison landing a paltry two punches throughout the bizarre contest.

Tyson Fury vs Dillian Whyte (WBC - April 2022)

Tyson Fury put his WBC on the line against two different British opponents in 2022 with the first being Dillian Whyte.

Whyte had long sought a world title opportunity having spent almost three years as mandatory, and finally got his opportunity against the Gypsy King.

Sadly for him, he was no match for a rejuvenated Fury, who was riding the cusp of a wave after two hugely impressive wins over Deontay Wilder.

The Morecambe man largely toyed with his opponent for five rounds, before laying siege to the head and body of Whyte in the sixth to force a stoppage.

Tyson Fury vs Derek Chisora (WBC - December 2022)

Not for the first time in his career, Fury reversed the retirement plans he had announced just a couple of months earlier to fight long-term foe, and now friend, Derek Chisora.

The Gypsy King had failed to secure a unification clash with Oleksandr Usyk but staged his 'return' to the sport with a third triumph over the battle-hardened Chisora.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium played host to the bout as Fury claimed a tenth round TKO win.

Daniel Dubois vs Anthony Joshua (IBF - September 2024)

Daniel Dubois produced the performance of his life to bulldoze through two-time heavyweight ruler Anthony Joshua in a gargantuan encounter at Wembley Stadium in September 2024.

After being elevated to IBF champion following Usyk's decision to vacate, Joshua was afforded the opportunity of challenging to become a three-time heavyweight titlist, but came up significantly short against 'Dynamite' Dubois.

The pre-fight outsider was explosive from the get-go, flooring AJ on four occasions as he notched-up a sensational fifth round stoppage to make a successful first defence of his prized strap.
